I’m a big fan of the Dexateens, so it’s no suprise that Lost and Found is my favourite record of the year so far. What is a surprise, is that it’s their best album yet. When you consider how fantastic their other records are, that’s quite an achievement. When you consider that the band are giving it away for free, you realise that the world is still a marvellous place to live in.

What I love about the Dexateens is the way the band stay true to the soulful spirit of country music so sadly lacking in many of today’s higher profile ‘americana’ acts (Band of Horses, My Morning Jacket)who have more in common with Chris Martin than Willie Nelson. There isn’t a contemporary country rock band that comes close in my opinion. They have the swampy rock n roll swing of late 60s Sir Douglas Quintent and Creedence Clearwater Revival and the soul of Gram Parsons. They have the punk rock core of the Quadrajets and the drunken natural licks of Keith Richards in country mode. In short, The Dexateens a fabulous band and anyone who thinks Kings of Leon’s first couple of singles are their best records, who has ever been bored by Iron & Wine or disappointed with Ryan Adams’ album-a-week scattergun tactics will discover they have a new favourite band in the Dexateens. What makes Lost and Found their best album, is the quality of the song writing. You get 9 modern country classics - every single one of them a killer tune - every single one of them played with the looseness and joi de vie that characterises the band. The title track is an infectious southern rock gem, ‘Mary’ is country garage rock as rough and as ass kicking as anything on their Estrus records and ‘Slender Thread’ sounds like a hit single with Steve Cropper chops.
