Emanuel and the Fear is a joyful, 11-piece pop outfit spilling ink on all the right places—splashed across L Magazine, featured in the Voice, playing out sold out shows with David Byrne, TV on the Radio and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson in attendance.
2008 was a shit year for music.
With the economy falling down around us, the music industry continued to crumble under the pressure of the internet…falling down, down, down and barely even pulling in a cent (or so they would like you to believe). Bands inspired by the few cash cows we have left aped and copied their way through records. Folks were led to believe that a band like Fleet Foxes made a better, more lasting impression with their record then say someone like Deerhunter did.
Without really thinking, this compilation turned out to lean about 50% into the post-punk/new wave direction (I guess that the odds are that it would with my type of music collection). Several of the artists covered and doing the covering in this mix are post-punk/new wave with exceptions like Dragonette’s version of ZZ Top’s Sharp Dressed Man, Bjork’s version of the Bond tune You Only Live Twice, Chromatics’ version of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m On Fire, and Kate Bush’s version of Elton John’s Rocket Man. This one’s called Something Borrowed. Check back here next Sunday for the first part of the Everyday is Like Sunday, Except for Blue Monday and Ruby Tuesday, and…Well, Friday I’m in Love Year-End Round-Up (it’s lucky I don’t have to create a banner for that).<br />

Asthmatic Kitty underwent quite an expansion in 2008. One of the acts I have been most intrigued by is The Welcome Wagon. The Welcome Wagon is a married couple, the Reverend Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique. With little-to-no musical training, Vito purchased a guitar with the desire to sing hymns with his family. With no ability to read music, Vito simply made up new tunes to accompany the old words in the songs. Gradually the two began playing onto and into some small small stages at bars, parties, and seminaries. This year they decided to make a record, one that Sufjan Stevens helped them produce and arrange.
