Nick Cave news

ATP NY '09: Dirty Three (w/Nick Cave)

Last year the most Twittered event of the first day of the festival may have been the bed bugs that were present (thankfully no reports this year!), but this year the most talked about moment of the day came very early on when Nick Cave joined the Dirty Three for their performance of

Ocean Songs

.

Headless Heroes

Headless Heroes consists of a group of artists working together to create/recreate music for music’s sake. The group’s lead voice is Alela Diane and the mission is to produce gloriously fresh creations of older songs that may have gotten lost in the cracks of time. The group covers a wide range, spanning over forty years, from "Daniel Johnston, The Jesus & Mary Chain and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds back to Vashti Bunyan, Linda Perhacs and The Gentle Soul.

Bands that I did not listen to in 2k8

At the beginning of 2k8, I made a post about bands I did not listen to in 2k7. Now it is 2k9, and I will make a list of bands that I did not listen to in 2k8. It is important to understand that you are a consumer in a wide open marketplace. You allegedly have tons of options, with lots of music 2 listen 2. However, it is important 2 recognize that u usually ‘judge a band by itz name’ kinda like how u ‘judge books by their covers.’ If a book has a zany/boring/confusing cover, you will not buy it. The same theory applies to band names.

My Top 40 Albums of 2008: Numbers 16 Through 9

ladytron.jpg

So, we’ve come to the second last installment of my Top 40 Albums of 2008. Before plunging into the fray once more, I will attempt to remind you of what music the summer of 2008 brought with it. July kicked off with releases by Beck, The Black Ghosts, Ratatat, The Hold Steady, and an excellent Kitsune remix album by Digitalism. The month ended with albums from post-punk veterans Wire, CSS, Bodies of Water, Little Ones, Friendly Fires, The Black Kids, and The Great Northwest. Of course there was also a rather disappointing new album from Primal Scream and the debut from Ida Maria, whose song Better When You’re Naked has drilled a painful hole into the back of my skull.

The latter half of summer, namely August, saw records from Vanilla Swingers, The Faint, Noah and the Whale, Late of the Pier, The Stills, Ra Ra Riot, and Pop Levi. There were also records that have already appeared in this countdown, including those from Van She, The Deer Tracks, and Duchess Says. August also brought the solo debut by Conor Oberst, which I confess confused me since I figured he essentially was Bright Eyes, and The Airbourne Toxic Event released their debut album, culminating in pointless, unwinnable wars with Pitchfork. And there was the seemingly inevitable comeback album from The Verve that I frankly didn’t need.
