Tonight I want a gig. Any gig.
In the end, due to timings I find that I have snubbed two free events (
Japanese Voyeursat Hoxton Bar & Grill,
oOoOOat Old Blue Last) and am instead here at the Garage to see The Primitives. Again.
It’s a happy choice. I’ve not been in this venue since its refurbishment more than a year ago.
The Luminaire shuts at the end of the year, so this is my last chance to savour the place. I’ve not been uncritical of the venue in the past, as I’ve always associated it with a frustratingly lax approach to band timings. However, I’m still sad to see it go. As a breathless and sweating Hawnay Troof exclaims later in the evening “Venue shuts, venue opens, it’s the circle of life!”
I love this performance of Arthur Baker’s ‘You Can Make Me Feel Bad’ by Frankie Rose & The Outs. It features on the ex-Vivian Girls/Crystal Stilts/Dum Dum Girls drummer and friend’s self-titled debut album out now.
I’m standing in the dry grass dustbowl that is Shoreditch Park. I’m watching three drummers and a phalanx of guitarists bash and thrash their way through a series of tunes. This is Action Beat, the self-styled ‘Noise Band from Bletchley”. We are here for the 1-2-3-4 Shoreditch Festival and sights such as this are eyed with idle contentment by the early crowds lolling in the scrub in front of the main stage.

In the Red’s profile may have risen in recent years through releases by King Khan & BBQ, Vivian Girls and Jay Reatard, but for years the L.A. label’s been buttering your croissant with permanently cool, stylishly unfashionable garage-rawk like what this here Reigning Sound band makes.
Dum Dum Girls perform "Hey Sis" at their first ever live show, yesterday afternoon at the Captured Tracks/Woodsist Festival in Brooklyn. Featuring Frankie Rose (Crystal Stilts, ex-Vivian Girls) on drums, Mike Sniper (Blank Dogs) on bass, and Brandon Welchez (Crocodiles) on guitar:
Aquarium Drunkard, Gorilla Vs Bear, Largehearted Boy, My Old Kentucky Blog and You Ain’t No Picasso have once again teamed up to bring you Hot Freaks!

New track from Vivian Girls, taken from The World’s Lousy With Ideas 8. In related news, the girls recently recorded a 7" on an island in England and they liked Twilight the book better than Twilight the movie (via Twitter).

At the beginning of 2k8, I made a post about bands I did not listen to in 2k7. Now it is 2k9, and I will make a list of bands that I did not listen to in 2k8. It is important to understand that you are a consumer in a wide open marketplace. You allegedly have tons of options, with lots of music 2 listen 2. However, it is important 2 recognize that u usually ‘judge a band by itz name’ kinda like how u ‘judge books by their covers.’ If a book has a zany/boring/confusing cover, you will not buy it. The same theory applies to band names.

This week Deli Magazine concluded the voting for their best NY band of 2008 with Vivian Girls, Chairlift, and Secret Life of Sofia coming in in the top spots proving once again that the bands coming out of New York are top notch artists that are making an impact in this music world. It was nice to see the list of bands that were nominated (full disclosure: I was one of the jurors to pick these bands my choices; Secret Life of Sofia, Brownwater, & Brilliant Sweaters) ranging from the absolutely obscure bands from Staten Island (see: Brownwater) to bands that have already made it on a larger scale (see: Vivian Girls, Titus Andronicus, etc.). But where does this leave us for 2009? Well it seems like the year is going to be another year full of top notch bands from New York fighting for your attention. Everyone on this list is deserving of your attention and will definitely be playing a lot around the city in the next 12-months so make sure you get out and see them soon!!!
