After Animal Collective’s art show at the Guggenheim, the Alt Report tracked ‘how it was covered’ by internet outlets. While most internet outlets have mastered how they will cover Animal Collective’s musical output for the next 10-20 years, just wanted to monitor the relevant alt/mainstream internet 2 see if any 1 would ‘pan’ the show, since so many twitterers called it ‘a huge waste of time and money.’
Last night I met a man in a bar who really likes Morrissey. There are bands that I really like – for example: by a combination of accident and desire, I’ve seen loveable scamps Art Brut a moderately unhealthy seven or eight times.

The Bundles are a supergroup for the low-brow indie set, anchored in the friendship of former Moldy Peach/ Juno soundtracker Kimya Dawson and New York anti-folk luminary/comic book artist Jeffrey Lewis.

Continuing my selfish self-reference guide to finding some actually good music to watch at SxSW continues with THE BEST LETTER OF THE ALPHABET. Why is ‘B’ the best? Well coz it’s curvy, has the best sound (BUH! for B!) and my initials consist of two of the fuckers. So, it’s with some excitement that I delve into SxSW’s current list of B’s who have been pretty much confirmed as playing that Texan extravaganza of industry excess.

Brad Barrett begins an epic preview of SXSW 10, recommending a whole pile of bands for each letter of the alphabet. Quite wisely, he starts the series of previews with the letter ‘A’.

With less than 48 hours left of 2009, I can finally reveal (to this lonely audience of pretty much myself) my favourite article and interview of 2009. Given the opportunity to interview Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo - twice, once on the phone and once in person - might as well be the climax of my writing intentions. Getting Sonic Youth on the cover of a magazine may as well signal the end of my fiery passion to contribute cover stories to magazines. It didn’t, but it felt at the time as if I’d done everything I’d set out to do. Why? Because this band represent ground zero for music to me.

Daniel Johnston is known mainly for two things: having Kurt Cobain as a famous fan, and having spent a good portion of his life dealing with schizophrenia. His immense catalog of songs — tender, honest, direct and weird, often all at once — somehow gets short shrift. Take “I Had Lost My Mind,” a brief, wildly catchy tune from Is and Always Was (due the first week of October).

I’ve said this before, but I’ve been a fan of The Dø since discovering them here as a reader. Their A Mouthful LP is still getting released in various countries around the world, which gives me the opportunity to keep posting more of their insanely pleasant, if not all that revolutionary, pop.

Any band that is hand picked by a member of No Age to release an album on his label is gonna get more then its fare share of a look. Silk Flowers is just such a band. Signed to Dean Spurnt’s Post Present Medium label, the band recently came to my attention thanks to Spurnt’s pushing of the group. True he calls them "probably the weirdest band I know" and they definitely live up to that billing but there is something downright catchy about their music, even if you have to give it time to branch out and become comfortable in your ears.

We’re super excited to see Mika Miko and our friends The Coathangers who we’re playing with at Sneaky Dees! We always love dd/mm/yyyy! Also excited to see the Gza if we can get in. The lineup is crazy cool! Oh and The Creeping Nobodies…not sure if they are playing but they are amazing and we’ll totally go see them if they are playing.
