Spiritualized are performing Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space in May at Butlins, as part of the Matt Groening curated ATP weekend. It’s a reprise of the production that saw them sell out 4 nights at the Barbican.
Also featured in the new line up announcement are The Fresh and Onlys and Cold Cave.
Full press release after the break.

As yall know from the popular website calendar.blogspot.com, the year 2k9 only has 2 months left. The annual music cycle is ‘officially over’ and will be dormant until the first major indie album release in 2k10. This means ‘we’ as an altosphere need 2 do our best to reflect on the year that we just lived, and try 2 analyze which album/artist/mp3 we want to be the embodiment of 2k9. Each alt website has a responsibility to select a ‘best’ artist, which may not actually ‘be the best’, but instead will represent ‘how they think 2k9 should be remembered’, and convince u 2 ’stay on board with us, cuz our perception of the indiesphere is really genuine and down2earth in a hi-level kinda way.’

It used to be well known that the success of a show involving Bradford Cox depended entirely on the musician’s fragile mood. However from the word go tonight seems to almost pinpoint the moment he fully transitions from tortured artist to wholesome entertainer. The show opens with ‘Quick Canal’ his beautifully ambient duet with Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier and the pair swap laughing glances as they are joined on stage with an eight year old ‘interpretive dancer with a future’ .
What’s up guys. This is Mike.. Go ahead and call me MikeBro in honor of Carles the #1 altbro of all time. haha. Go ahead, give me shit cause I’m not him, but give me a little bit of room to grow, too. Sure no one can match Carleses style, but I think if you guys keep coming back, you’ll start to open up to new ideas and words, and just give me a chance to shine. Maybe I need to make a new dotcom for this site, but thats something we can chat about later.. Right now, I have the keys to the badboy, so lets just buckle our seatbelts and take it for a wild ride….
Damn near the last minute I was given a chance to attend this year’s ATP NY (I’ll be covering it for Gothamist all weekend) and I have to say I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a musical weekend in ages! With bands like The Flaming Lips, Deerhunter, and Animal Collective all on tap and crazy concoctions like Bob Mould with No Age (performing as Hüsker Dü) and the Boredoms doing a 9 drum BOADRUM, this is gonna be a crazy weekend! It starts tonight with several legendary performers reprising classic albums and a highly publicized reunion from The Jesus Lizard that we are especially amped for! Here’s what I’ll be catching tonight (full review tomorrow hopefully!) and you should join along. I’m skipping the comedy stage, most of those guys are from the area already.
3:15pm: The Drones
The first act to take the stage this weekend are from Australia and are here to promote their upcoming album (which just happens to be on ATP Recordings). Even though they are promoting a new album they will be performing Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By in its entirety. I’ve honestly never really listened to their music so this will be a new experience for me, but since they are the first band of the weekend they will probably get my undivided attention and a lot of my bubbling energy!
The Lotus Plaza album comes out in stores next week, but I’ve had a copy for months now. I’m not saying this to brag — in this era of leaked records, who could possibly care? — but to explain that I’ve been living with this music for a while now, to the point that I’ve already got nostalgic memories attached to the songs.

Just a heads up to anyone around the Auburn area (that counts you Atlanta and Athens readers), as Atlanta five-piece Deerhunter are set to perform here in town tomorrow night at 9pm at Ford Ct. This is actually sort of a big deal as bands like this never come around to this neck of the woods; this fact I can certainly attest to.
It’ll be $10 at the door (I think) and as far as directions are concerned, I couldn’t really tell you as the venue’s (it’s actually a basement) myspace page is devoid of any useful information like that. Just hit me up in an email or twitter, and I’ll try to get you some solid directions myself if you’re interested in attending. Or if anyone from the Auburn area who reads this would like to help with this, please reply in the comments.
I’m sure after the recent success of their recent album Microcastle, that you’ll probably won’t be able to see them in such a small venue like this for quite some time. For a little taste of what’s in store, here’s a video of the band performing live at this year’s Noise Pop Festival. Do say hello if you’re gonna be there!
2008 was a shit year for music.
With the economy falling down around us, the music industry continued to crumble under the pressure of the internet…falling down, down, down and barely even pulling in a cent (or so they would like you to believe). Bands inspired by the few cash cows we have left aped and copied their way through records. Folks were led to believe that a band like Fleet Foxes made a better, more lasting impression with their record then say someone like Deerhunter did.
As if arbitrarily ranking one’s favorite albums of the year isn’t an absurd enough task, we leave you for the weekend with our favorite songs of 2008. Check David’s list at the bottom of the post…

Deerhunter, Times New Viking, and Nite Jewel played at Emo’s down in Austin last night, and our exceedingly awesome new photographer Pooneh Ghana was in the building. She captured these great images of Bradford Cox and crew, including one of Whitney of Deerhunter doubling as TNV’s human keyboard stand.
