New Favourite Band news

Top 20 Records of 2011

Everyone seems to be whinging on about records of the year lists at the moment, how we’re all sick of them as there are too many and they’re irrelevant anyway.  But I like them. So here’s mine.

I’ve put them in a numbered order, but it’s fairly arbitrary. They’re all awesome so be sure to get that mousewheel working and explore down to the bottom of the page. Hopefully you’ll find plenty to like.

And happy Christmas!

Personal & The Pizzas: Diet, Crime, & Delinquency

"Hey, what’s up you little jerks? Long time no see uh? You ready to learn something?"

Jack of Heart - Only Seven Inches for your Girlfriend?

Gratuitous Jack of Heart endorsement from Jared Black Lips, pic from Falsestuff

Don’t let the terrible title put you off. ‘Only Seven Inches For your Girlfriend?’ is a compilation of excellent singles from Montpellier based psych fanatics Jack of Heart, and I tip my hat to new label Teenage Menapause Records for putting it together.

Mean Jeans - Steve Don't Party No More

So I’m not going to score any cool points for posting this, but Mean Jean’s ‘Steve Don’t Party No More video’ is cheering me the hell up on an otherwise shitty Monday morning.  Enjoy…

1,2,3

1,2,3 play the kind of Lennony psyche pop that Supergrass strayed into before calling it a day. 1,2,3’s single ‘Confetti’ is a good example - very Gaz Coombes on the vocals, but with more noise and punchiness going on in the track.

The Drab Doo Riffs

The Drab Doo Riffs play hot wired garage rock that doesn’t rely on fuzzy tones to pack a punch.  New EP Bury Me in Drab is slinky and taut rather than sludgy - with Make Up/Copter style beats and Gories girl/boy call and response.

We have an excellent tune from the EP to download as a sample.  Drives Me Crazy shows off the Doo Riffs at their best, all frazzled energy and  verge-of-hysteria vocals.  It makes you want to get on up too - you can be sure they’re wearing their dancing shoes with their straitjackets.

Win tix to The Good The Bad EP launch @Whoreditch

The Good The Bad are launching their nut-clenchingly fantastic debut EP on 13 November at new club Whoreditch.  They play amazing ‘new surf flamenco’ with tonnes of rock n roll balls - surely destined to be everyone’s party band / soundtrack composers of choice.

Also playing are Bears from Labrador and there’s DJ’ing from Akira the Don, among others.

With such a tasteful line up for their first night, it’s a good bet that Whoreditch will become a regular feature on your late night entertainment calendar.

Because we like you all so much, we have 2 guest list places to give away to the event.

Lovvers - OCD GO GO Girls

New vid from the Lovvers. It’s like David Lynch directing the Blair Witch Project, with a soundtrack by The Exploding Hearts.

Thee Uncomfortables - new single

An Uncomfortable, pic by T Rose

New single from Thee Uncomfortables in a natty mix of Horrors/Munsters style spook rock on the a-side, and David Devant harmony music hall doo wop on the flipside. There’s a certain vaudevillian campness gumming the styles together, making for some refreshing hooky pop with more thought and substance than most.

Holy State vinyl double whammy

Holy State flyin the flannel, pic by Paul J Crav

Holy State play awesome Hot Snakes / Fugazi style taut rock n roll with no punches pulled. It’s uncompromising Dischord style stuff that’s a refreshing slap in the face to knock all of that indie dross out of your ear holes. Their feisty tunes have caught the attention of no less than two premium vinyl pushing record companies, who are including them on some upcoming releases you will want to own.
