So here is our top 20 records of 2009 list. I use the word ‘genius’ a lot on this page, but I’m not going to apologise for it. Because it all is.

Choosing a top 100 records of 2009 may seem a little excessive but it has been a fucking awesome year for music. No question. We’ve mixed together albums, singles and individual tracks in our list, because we can.
The first batch is our top 100-81 and even though they’re at the lower reaches of our countdown, they’re all still amazing. We stand by every single record in the whole 100 and encourage you to check out, purchase and enjoy our recommended releases of this year.
When is the best time to release a new video? When everyone is talking about you right? Who cares what they’re saying…as long as they’re saying something.
Black Lips lead singer Jared Swilley may not have come out on the winning end in his tussle with Wavves lead singer Nathan Williams, or within all the commentary that followed, but the band’s name is still on the tips of everyone’s tongues at the moment. They released this new video for Let It Grow, from their latest album 200 Million Thousand (out through Die Slaughterhaus/Vice Music).
We’ve kept a close eye on Black Lips so far this year, and we’ve especially been loving Short Fuse, from 200 Million Thousand, their new album.
The band is going on a little "blog tour" this week and will be discussing five for their favorite tracks from the album. We’re gonna kick things off today and check back each day this week as we’ll point you to the next in the series.
Let's reminisce the things we dig about this video: lax, sexy, lazy beats juxtaposed with lyrics about war, blatant DIY effects shot on a super 8 camera bought on the cheap, dizzying sepia cut away vignettes, cemeteries, Atlanta graffiti, red roses, and motel mirrors. Plus, let us not forget the fun fact that director Edward Tegethoff was in a punk band (called Freedom Puff) in which he used to eat live crickets on stage. (If anyone ever saw Freedom Puff perform, do speak up). When The Black Lips' lead singer/guitarist Cole Alexander was asked by Vice what he meant to portray in the video, he said : "To make a pop culture observation of the ruffled feathers of the trifilin asses of the religious extreme." Pretty much sums but why were are psyched to see The Black Lips play (read: possibly vomit, kiss, start pyrotechnic warfare, or urinate) on stage this Monday, March 9th, at Bowery Ballroom in NYC.
