Don’t know what angle to go with here. I could talk about how the fact Florence always sounds like a wailing widow means her vocals are perfect for playing the role of anonymous diva to club remixes’ throbbing machismo (by The xx, Seiji, Boy 8-Bit and now Breakage). Alternatively I could talk about how it’s Friday, and that means this song will have you gagging for the night like a dog does for steak. Do what you like with this because Breakage certainly has, revving up his dubstep steamroller and flattening the track into something as irresistible as it is thuggy.

Seems appropriate that a tune called "Drumming Song" would contain some manic percussion. Here, it’s tweaked by London bass enthusiast, Diplo crony, and fellow redhead Boy 8-Bit, who chisels it into an dewy, clanging 4/4 club track.

Sometimes hooks are so mangled from their original form that singing along becomes impossible. As if that would prevent us from trying. To little success, we tried arching our lungs over the cut-up voice of Florence Welch here, though even met with failure it’s still lodged in our brains. The xx resung the rest of the tune for their 2-steppy sorta cover/remix, where xylophone and harp seem like logically urbane instrument choices. Very couth, guys.

Several years ago my favorite movie in the world was Who’s Harry Crumb, a long forgotten detective movie starring John Candy, a guy whom, for whatever reason, I couldn’t get enough of growing up. Shit, was that dude funny. Anyway, the movie’s climax was soundtracked by this really gnarly Bonnie Tyler track (not an oxymoron) named "Holding Out For Hero" (the big guy!) and it was a purebred piano burner. This dance floor reimagining of Florence and the Machine’s "Rabbit Heart" is of the same heart rate-jumping genus
Firstly, I wanted to focus on real stand-out tracks. Therefore you’ll not see any songs from my top two albums, mainly because they’re all so good that none in particular stand out, and I couldn’t populate the list with tracks from my top five albums. I’ve also tried to avoid including particular artists more than once (I know I have, but it’s a collaboration…). But even with these rules, how do you order 50 tracks? The top 10, maybe even the top 20 follows some sort of rough merit, but after that the list pretty much stays in the same arbitrary order that I first wrote down off the top of my head. So it’s safe to say that there’s little to separate any of these songs, and if I had to do it again starting from scratch, it would probably look quite different. What you should remember is that these are all GREAT SONGS.
Thoughts: It seems every month or three we get a hot new lady from the other side of the pond invading our iPods and blasting through every Urban Outiftters in town. Who knows where this little trend started but with a list of invading artists that include the likes of Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Estelle, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and many many more it’s tough to fight the female British invasion going down these days.
