As you may have noticed, along with the lack of posts going on around here, the Graboid has seemingly disappeared as well the past couple of weeks. To catch everyone back up to speed, I’ve decided to post the album releases from the past few weeks that we’ve missed along with everything from this week. I’m sure I may have missed some releases, but I think I’ve covered most of the important stuff for the most part. As usual, let us know what album(s) you’ve been excited about and if we managed to forget anything!

Sonic Youth’s 16th studio album, The Eternal, hit my mailbox this weekend, so I tore it open and popped it in. Sacred Trickster, the first free download, kicks it off right…two minutes of Kim Gordon over furious crunch and fuzz.
Shawn Fogel’s Golden Bloom, named one of “8 Undiscovered bands worth a listen” by SPIN Magazine, is currently in the studio with producer/engineer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Mates of State) and Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek). Fogel plans to release Golden Bloom’s next LP in the summer of 2009.
A seasoned (which makes him sound a bit of a plank, geddit plank seasoned wood, god I’m wasted here) recording artist, Fogel has toured the nation solo and with many of his musical peers, including Guster, Clem Snide, Ben Lee, Adam Green (of Moldy Peaches) , Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth) and comedian Eugene Mirman (Sub Pop Records).
He also counts The Philistines Jr. , The Zambonis (Nettwerk Records) and The LeeVees (Reprise/JDub Records) among his musical partners, often putting his manifold-musical talents to good use playing with them. Never one to avoid political discourse, Fogel’s Golden Bloom sheds his own thoughts on former governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich’s, err, predicament. In the one-minute song aptly titled, ‘Your Minute of Fame’ (see free track below), the simple question arises, “What are you thinking?”
Gavin: A lot happened in 2008. It seems so long ago now. Like any blog worth it’s salt and peppa though, we have decided to put together our best/worst gigs and albums of the year and used our clever little thinking boxes in our heads to have a guess (/dictate?) who will be floating boats in the next twelve months or so. Have a read and put us in our place about your favourite albums and who you think will storm 09…
A three-piece led by founding members Ken Ramos (vocals/guitar) and Melissa Pleckham (bass), Shiloe combine the driving force of Sleater-Kinney with the atmosphere of Interpol, tied together with the roughness of Sonic Youth.

For fans of Sonic Youth and Batrider comes Ume (pronounced ooo-may), being touted as one of the hottest new bands on a number of popular American music blogs.
I just liked the pun originally but now I want one of these bad boys:

as designed by noise monster-girl (sound artist) Jessica Rylan (who seems to have kind of reinvented the noise genre, with added swirls and flourishes and less of the My Dad’s Bigger Than Your Dad vocalising) and used by her and Cody Renaldo (son of Lee, from Sonic Youth) and others I hadn’t heard of like Tara Rogers.
