When did size become so important for North American and Canadian bands? I’ve been trying to convince Mrs Devil that size ain’t important and now it seems that you can’t be in a band if it’s got less members than there are legs at an octopuses garden party.

This is a Leeds group that has flown under our radar until very recently, but it seems as though all of the right people in England have been paying attention to them. Their recent single "23 Fears" has received nods of approval from Steve Lamacq, Zane Lowe, Radio 1, and Q Radio while the band is busy prepping their debut album. First time listeners will notice similarities to Elbow and the Arcade Fire, but the band puts their own mystical spin on the formula. The band has relocated to a chapel in Lincolnshire with Adam Noble (the Guillemots), and while they still in midst of recording, expect the finish product sometime later this year.

2008 is taking it’s final bow and a what a year it has been. While ‘07 was dominated by a slew of indie rock heavy hitters releasing awesome albums (Spoon, Of Montreal, Arcade Fire, Wilco, Radiohead) this is a year where new talent seems to be garnering the most attention. For me at least, this has been a very good thing with 1/5th of my favorite albums this year being debuts and just as many being sophomore releases. This isn’t to say that old favorites didn’t deliver this year as well, as a number of albums on this list are from bands that I’ve listened to and loved for years.

I know very little about Oakland’s Magic Me. Their Myspace site is not particularly informative and doesn’t include any pictures of the band and google is not much help either.

One of the problems with writing about bands from other countries is the lack of biographical information in English. Listening to bands sing in another language may be a different story — good music is good music, but if I can’t educate my readers about a band, then I have a little problem.

Two days until the weekend and instead of holiday snow falling out of the sky, we’ve got sheets of grey here in New York. It’s pretty gross outside but here’s a ticket to Antidote City: Australian sextet the Seabellies. While working within the sprawling, mega-ambitious indie rock paradigm perfected by Broken Social Scene and the Arcade Fire, the Seabellies—who actually made their US stage debut at the Fader Fort during CMJ in October—have tapped a similar melodic vein more closely traced to bands like Death Cab for Cutie or Stars
Ironically, there isn’t much info to be found on Montreal-based band Clues except that it contains Alden Penner formerly of The Unicorns, Brendan Reed who was once a part of David Bowie’s favorite band Arcade Fire and some other talented folks from up north.
