interpol part 1: london

Thu, 2007/11/29 - Alexandra Palace
ARTROCKER RATING:
Alexandra Palace is forbidding. Make the most of the view from the shuttle bus on the way up, ‘cause you ain’t gonna be seeing much else once the show starts… Last time I saw Interpol at the beginning of the Antics tour it was like watching four mannequins miming to Interpol records- in a very fucking cool way, with the understated lighting giving away nothing except silhouettes.
'Evil' reaffirms itself as one of the songs of this generation to the point where some people walk out straight after it, having taken what they came for.
Now they’ve signed with Capitol and hired Coldplay’s manager, who you guess told the mannequins to rock out a little. Daniel Kessler moves way too much for someone who never used to move, and it’s awkward - the tension of their machined rhythms no longer reflected in the space they carved between themselves when motionless. I hold my breath and expect the glacial laser that is opener ‘Pioneer to the Falls’ to cut me in two with it’s riff. It doesn’t, because until they reach ‘The Lighthouse’- ironically the slowest song of the night - it’s just too damn quiet in here. We know the score with the acoustics, but I still want the sound to tear my head off, even if it is with white noise. These songs go hauntingly hand in hand with the beautiful and the doomed memories of many a relationship in this room, I know that much, and nothing makes hair stand like ‘C’mere’ and ‘Not Even Jail’. They extract in equal measure from all three LPs, and like every Interpol fan know exactly what their best songs are. ‘Evil’ reaffirms itself as one of the songs of this generation to the point where some people walk out straight after it, having taken what they came for. You almost can’t blame them - the queues for the shuttle bus in winter must claim lives. Interpol surprise no one live. They will bleed cool and dark allure forever, but next time I wanna see them in a dirty venue having sacked their manager. PART TWO: INTERPOL IN GLASGOW

    Well said Ben!

I like their records a lot but there was definitely something missing at the gig, I left thoroughly uninspired... though I braved the walk down to Wood Green instead of bothering with the bus myself, it's a surprisingly short distance given how desperate those queues always look!
