sunburned hand of THE man
Sat, 2007/11/03 - Old Blue Last, London
ARTROCKER RATING:
Couple of years ago, after seeing Sunburned Hand of the Man in The Cube in Bristol, I found myself in the marvellous Jack’s Records on Sheffield’s Division Street, flicking through multiple copies of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ gatefold: they were all £4.
the band let it rip - riding the narrow line that divides the abstract from the tuneful...
Seconds later, I found a live record by the aforementioned Sunburned band for the princely sum of £25. Wha… the… ? Ashamedly, it was only at this moment that I conceptualised how their gig of structured noise must have made so much sense to those who were tuned in.
And that’s what it is with Sunburned Hand of the Man: they challenge you to make sense of them. Whilst not altogether avant garde, at tonight’s gig they played no discernible tunes for the first two minutes, then the band let it rip - riding the narrow line that divides the abstract from the tuneful.
So tonight is ‘Guardian Guide Gig of the week’, and in keeping with their popularity the band have occasional melodies - but they also fill their sound out with echoed murmurs, clicks, spiralling coloured sticks and shouting women. It’s the sort of abstract sound that you’ll just have to hear live to find out what it’s all about.
