slow club, THE patty winters show, THE cribs and more - singles for THE week beginning oct 29!

Released: Mon, 2007/10/29 on verious indie schmindies
ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: THE PATTY WINTERS SHOW / YOU ARE WRONG (VACUOUS POP) There’s a home-made charm to this record, and a juxtaposition between punk muscle and indie lament that makes it really endearing. In other words, this will please Smiths fans and artrock hedonists alike. It falls just shy of having the kind of killer hook that might really get The Patty Winters show bursting out of their box, but that doesn’t stop it sounding like a DIY classic. Let’s keep this one a secret, huh?

Riot In Belgium have thrown together a rubber stretching dancefloor grinder that might just ease the stalemate...
SLOW CLUB / YOU AND ME (MISHI MISHI)

In line with Noah and The Whale, there’s a cool new breed of indie pop acts coming out at the moment, who’s wide eyed enthusiasm really captures the creative spirit of youth. Like a speeded up, more enthusiastic take on the White Stripes ‘Me and You Are Gonna be Friends’, this is full of simple melodies and loud hand claps, all guided by a nice boy / girl duel vocal that gradually builds into a classroom full of chanting voices. Cracking.

SUPER FURRY ANIMALS / RUN-AWAY (ROUGH TRADE)

After the Spanish omelette of an album that was Love Kraft, it’s great to see the Furries back in the domain of the 3 minute pop song. Run-away is a sad / uplifting tale of a lovers inability to save his relationship. “We nearly fought with teeth and nails / I still recall your banking details”, laments Gruff.

THE CRIBS / DON’T YOU WANNA BE RELEVENT? (WICHITA) This is a pole vaulting, firework triggering, last day of school of a single. The Cribs have got a knack for urgent melodies in the vein of The Killers, although they replace the bombast and slick production of the latter for punk rock vibrancy. Top stuff.

RIOT IN BELGIUM / LA MUSUQUE (RELISH)

For anyone that found the cold hard stare of Electroclash too inhumane to bear, Riot In Belgium have thrown together a rubber stretching dancefloor grinder that might just ease the stalemate. This is full of chunky beats, sexy moans and pelvis swirling action. Again, no killer hook – but that won’t matter at 1am on Friday night.

CHARLOTTE HATHERLY / AGAIN (LITTLE SISTER)

Having not investigated the former Ash guitarist’s solo musings before, it’s a nice surprise to find that they sound NOTHING LIKE ASH! Which is probably a good thing. This is more of a psychedleic pop song – it’s a melancholy, cinematic beast that flusters about trying to find a signature hook. It’s nicely aquatic, if confused.
