Released: Mon, 2007/10/15 on various coolio schmoolios
ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: ASOBI SEKSU / STRAWBERRIES (ONE LITTLE INDIAN)

This is like a cute Japanese cartoon about some kind of pixie creature which walks through a tropical forest, only to mutate into a razor toothed mutant beast and spurt liquid fire through it’s nostrils. Things become confusing yet ethereal when Aled Jones pops up to perform a choral middle 8, after which the song magnificently soils itself with an apocalyptic grunge-rock meltdown. In other words, top marks!
It would make a fine soundtrack to a nudist colony outing, or perhaps a Jean Luc Goddard montage...
SKY LARKIN / MOLTEN (DANCE TO THE RADIO) What the blazes - a track that doesn’t sound 1980s! Call the thought police! Or rather, someone give Sky Larkin a cigar - as this is a quality garage rock choon. Katie Harkin sounds desperate, sexy and stylish while all manner of ghastly guitar chaos erupts behind her. The whole thing revs along with the kind of pre-battle adrenalin that you can’t fail to get off on. Rip off your shackles! Give the finger to the man! Dance to the… er… radio! ROBOTS IN DISGUISE / THE SEX HAS MADE ME STUPID (PRESIDENT) It’s tempting to argue that free newspapers, Peaches Geldof’s private life and the universal plague of advertising is going to make us stupid way before sex ever will, but hey! Best not argue with robots. This is the kind of fuzzy disco stomp that calls for a Thriller style zombie dance, and although it isn’t quite the dogs bollocks, the band play occasional extras in the Mighty Boosh, so respect is due… SEVENTEEN EVERGREEN / MUSIC IS THE WINE (LUCKY NUMBER) We loved Seventeen Evergreen’s last EP, even if it did have a tendency to make us mong at our desks. Still, this bouncy little number goes some way to re-addressing the balance, with its fuzzy breakbeats and Age-Of-Aquarius style chanting. It would make a fine soundtrack to a nudist colony outing, or perhaps a Jean Luc Goddard montage. VON SUDENFED / THE RHINOHEAD (DOMINO) Frankly, any song that features Mark E Smith crooning about his snooker hero Ronnie O Sullivan is going to be worth a spin. But consider that this is Mark E Smith ranting over a relentless punked up disco beat, and I think we have what could be considered a ‘rare oddity’ on our hands. It’s weirdly erotic, even if it doesn’t quite live up to it’s bill. THE LOUNGS / GOOGLY MOOGLY (AKOUSTIK ANARKHY) ‘Googly Moogly’ is so Beach Boys it could wax a surfboard from 50ft - but luckliy The Loungs are more intelligent than yer average rip off merchants. Beer drenched ranting, a bittersweet middle 8 and all the enthusiasm of a dog at dinnertime make this a thrilling pop treat. THE MITCHELL BROTHERS / MICHAEL JACKSON (THE BEATS) Back in the early 90s a band called Negativeland released a single called U2, which on the cover featured a huge U2 logo. It also looked like the new U2 single. U2 sued. Negativeland were fucked. True story! Anyway, The Mitchell brothers have nearly pulled the same stunt here with a huge Michael Jackson logo, but it’s such a honest to God portait of the Whacko in his ‘80s prime, that the plastic one is more likely to blush than sue. We can also breath a sigh of relief- it’s a phat and phunky tune. LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION / MIDNIGHT SURPRISE (DOMINO) You know the feeling where you’re staring at the night sky wishing for aliens to come and whisk you away from all your earthly troubles? And then a few seconds later you consider that the aliens might actually be telepathically listening so you get scared and tell them you were just kidding while hiding under the covers pissing yourself? Well… that’s what this single’s like: a late night message to aliens. But without the pissing yourself bit.
