ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: THOSE DANCING DAYS / THOSE DANCING DAYS (WITCHITA)
It’s like being trapped in a giant fairground: just as you whiz off the waltzer you’re plunged onto the big dipper. From the techno pop intro to the organ-rich melodies and the Northern Soul affectations, this is the sound of young Sweden. Those raised on a diet of Siesta label acts know that the nearer the Arctic Circle you go the better the pop. Those Dancing Days is euphorically and unapologetically twee - and the northern lights are blazing brightly this autumn.
It may be that Hot Chip led ‘indie-dance’ out of the trenches, but it’s Metronomy who're doing all the fighting...
JOE LEAN & THE JING JANG JONG / LUCIO STARS FIRES (YALC)
Three words: lowest. Common. Denominator. Every time you hear this record another truly talented act has been denied record company cash. This radio friendly Razorshite romp is the kind of Libertines-lite fare that most commercial stations crave to feed their advertising habit. Do not believe the hype.
TODDLA T – DO YOU KNOW (1965)
Feeling peckish for some dancehall nourishment? ‘Do U Know’ rounds up the rare vinyl releases of Sheffield knob-twiddler Toddla T into a single 4-track disc. Mr Versatile sings for his supper on ‘Fill Me Up Mi Portion’ (which contains the line “rice and peas and chicken is nice”) and this isn’t just an appetiser either: three more mixes follow, including a mouthy girlie pop version that’s pure Nash/Allen (but better).
METRONOMY – RADIO LADIO (NEED NOW FUTURE)
It may be that Hot Chip led ‘indie-dance’ out of the trenches, but it’s Metronomy who’re doing all the fighting. Joseph Mount has already remixed for most of the hip and happening crowd, and although Metronomy have shrewdly name-checked radio in the title, it’s the rousing chorus chant that will get this deserved airplay. After three…”her name is R-A-D-I-O…”
GRANTURA / WAVES (RUFFA LANE)
Americana bands too often provide excuses for forty something Ikea types to drag themselves away from Radio 2 and into the seedy parts of town in search of some “hot pedal steel action”. Grantura’s breezy country-folk debut reminisces about Crosby, Stills and Nash over a pint of mild while secretly wishing it was rich enough to buy a mid-life crisis Ferrari and ride the Ventura Highway instead.
THE RAID – WE KNOW BEST (SHIFTY DISCO)
You know those tossers who briefly lift your spirits by professing to be big music fans and then go on to announce their fave bands to be Oasis, The Automatic and Stereophonics? Well this is for those rock comics following twats. Hailing from that hotbed of rock - Hemel Hempstead, it’s no surprise that The Raid once supported Ocean Colour Scene. I’d ban it now but some dodgy lorry driver will only smuggle it out of the provinces.
MR FOGG / SECIOV (WORST CASE SCENARIO)
Mr Fogg is tagged ‘intelligent electronica’, so I suppose that means that stupid electronica is down the market trading a cow for some beans. ‘Seciov’ is lovely and autumnal, rather like Get Cape Wear Cape snuggling up with Imogen Heap for a night of spooning. Comforting for those of an emotionally bruised disposition.
