THE wombats / THE holloways

ARTROCKER RATING:
It would be easy to get carried away with the hype that surrounds the Wombats at the moment. The band have rarely been out of the media spotlight for the twelve months since their Paul McCartney funded jaunt in Beijing – where they were highly regarded by one fan as “Niubi!” (That’s Mandarin for Cows Vagina folks!) Their hard work is now paying dividends and we’re here to witness a return to their hometown after a five month absence.
Considering that the band are releasing their debut album in November, they already have a huge hit list of three minute anthems...
The Holloway’s also come highly endorsed and are in good spirits ahead of the release of their new single ‘Two Left Feet’. However, I’m quickly reminded not to believe the hype: they are, at best, average. The highlight is the announcement by lead singer Alfie that his guitar is fucked, but he promises to soldier on - much to my disappointment
The venue has a rancid beer stained roof that smacks of a past multitude of high spirits. Murph Wombat starts with on a walk on track before launching into ‘Lost in the Post’ and then quickly into ‘School Uniform’ - by which point the youthfully populated crowd have made their own mark on the ceiling in raucous appreciation of their marsupial heroes.
Sweating heavily, Dan Wombat relieves himself of his soaked shirt - and Murph doesn’t miss the opportunity to poke fun at his ‘streak of piss’ like frame. “Is everyone ok out there? It’s just that there’s not much room on stage now Dan’s got his guns out!” This is aptly followed by the comedic ‘Patricia The Stripper’ and then ‘Dr Suzanne Mattox’ who “gives you pills and all sorts” - and judging by the energy of the crowd, has been handing them out like sweets after the Holloway’s set.
Thankfully the best is saved for last with ‘Lets Dance To Joy Division’ ‘Kill the Director’, and the massive ‘Backfire At The Disco’. Considering that the band are releasing their debut album in November, they already have a huge hit list of three minute anthems – and it’s certain to stonk the charts. I don’t know about “Niubi!” but believe the hype, the Wombats are the Dogs Bollocks.
