Ume

Phosphorescent Exposure

For fans of Sonic Youth and Batrider comes Ume (pronounced ooo-may), being touted as one of the hottest new bands on a number of popular American music blogs. The Austin, Texas trio of Lauren Larson (guitar/vocals), Eric Larson (bass) and Jeff Barrera create driving psychedelic pop music drawing heavily on spaced out guitars and catchy but simple drum and bass rhythms. Comparisons to both Sonic Youth and Batrider (and to a certain extent Deerhunter) are evident throughout Ume’s music, all possessing a similar style of building from a simple melody into heavy distortion. Larson’s vocals also have a similar quality to both Kim Gordon and Sarah Chadwick, especially on ‘Hurricane’ where Larson’s singing takes on a gravelly drawl. Otherwise her voice is a sweeter, less worn-out version of the other two, with purity in hitting notes the others never quite achieve.

The trio are just starting to gain momentum after a busy 2008 which included playing CMJ, SXSW and a number of other prominent festivals. They are about to self-release their brand new EP titled Sunshower on February 24, which should be available for purchase from the band’s website. One review says the the EP captures the power of the band’s live performance and if that’s true then it should sound very good indeed. Check out the selection of live photos on Ume’s myspace page, they have one of the hottest selection of live photos I have seen on any band page.

UME is SOO F***ing awesome! I felt like a kid again and that I was witnessing the rise of another Sonic youth meets Nirvana! Lauren are you Kurt's looong lost sister? Your set gave me goosebumps. And after the show you were a delight to hang out and chat with! Keep up the great work!
