With Camp A Low Hum 2009 boasting 20+ bands from across the ditch, there’s a slight Australian invasion happening towards the end of January/early February. Crayon Fields, Pikelet, Ned Collette, My Disco and Actor/Model have already announced shows outside of CALH. Melbourne’s Actor/Model is the first band to play New Zealand shows, starting on January 30 in Auckland, then playing the delightfully tropical Waiheke Island on January 31 and in Wellington (with Pikelet and Ned Collette) on February 5.
For those unfamiliar with Actor/Model, the band play lo-fi indie pop with scuzzy guitars, writhing synths and an overall sound that’s reminiscent of Sonic Youth. After originally playing in a band with now members of Die! Die! Die!, Actor/Model formed in Wellington before moving to Melbourne after hearing whispers that the scene there was more supportive of young talent. Back then (approx 2004) the band was a two-piece, with Ricky French on guitar/vocals and Karen Anson on synth/vocals, a drum machine was used to provide some percussion. More recently the band has added drummer Phil Smiley to the mix.
In 2007, Actor/Model released their debut EP titled Gossip About Guys to rave reviews, it remains the band’s only release to date. With an alluring shoegaze vibe, the EP’s five tracks take a journey into pop music that lends itself heavily towards gliding rhythms and spacey synth arrangements. Creating an overall soundscape that has Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’ written all over it, Actor/Model provide a captivating sound to entice anyone interested in bands like Deerhunter or Sonic Youth.
