foals, maximo park, bearsuit, THE gossip and more - singles for THE week beginning 20th august

Released: Mon, 2007/08/20 on various labels
ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: FOALS / MATHLETICS (TRANSGRESSIVE) They cannot be reasoned with, they cannot be bargained with, and they absolutely will not stop until all the beatniks have fled the party. Yep, this is a hard and fast superbeast that will shave goatie beards at 100ft. Into the mix they all go: propeller dance beats, roaring bass fuzz, and a singer that very gradually starts foaming at the mouth. Foals? You’re hired!
It’s been a trying few years, Indiepop, but I think we might just have found a use for your continued existence....
CALVIN HARRIS / MERRYMAKING AT MY PLACE (SONY) Calvin’s 3D mug has been plastered all over London these last few months, but I can’t find the justification for Sony’s big splash here. This isn’t bad in a Prince meets White Town en route to a Puff Daddy yacht party kind of way. But don‘t try and fool me with those emotional pianos, Harris. We know you’re just after the ass. MAXIMO PARK / GIRLS WHO PLAY GUITARS (WARP) Are the Maximo getting poppier or is it just me? This wastes no time in diving into it’s ultra catchy chorus, and keeps you on edge of the sofa with a kind of Egyptian bagpipe drone. Just how do they get away with being so celebratory without being cheesy? Maybe it’s in the running time – at 2 minutes 57 it’s virtually flabless. BEARSUIT / MORE SOUL THAN WIGAN CASINO (FANTASTIC PLASTIC) It’s been a trying few years, Indiepop, but I think we might just have found a use for your continued existence. Listening to this kind of tune on repeat could lead to years of bong abuse – but in moderation it’s a fantastic, spaced out singalong that’s full to the brim with colour and imagination. Go forth, Bearsuit! CAT THE DOG / I’M A ROMANTIC (VIRGIN) It’s debut single time, ands welcome to the arena Cat The Dog. They’re feeling feisty today, and I would ordinarily be tempted to dismiss this as dog food for Goths, but wait: the singer hisses like a foul snake! The guitars sound like Godzilla in city destroying mode! Is the jury out? A lot will hinge on that next single, ye dogs. THE GOSSIP / JEALOUS GIRLS (BACK YARD) For fecks sake will y’all stop comparing everything this band does to Standing in the (cough) way of (cough cough) Control? This stands up just fine on it’s own, with it’s minimalist fuzz bass and what sounds like an impassioned cry for reason amidst madness from The Ditto. If there is one complaint though, is it me or are Maximo Park and The Gossip releasing singles every other week at the moment?
