field day festival

Sat, 2007/08/11 - Victoria park, London
ARTROCKER RATING:
Goodbye Underage Festival, hello Field Day. London’s oldest public park barely had time to breathe before London’s ‘new psychedelic fete’ arrived to flatten its grass again. However, no swirling kaleidoscope of colours and sound greeted my arrival - the only psychedelic aspect of Field Day seemed to be the queues.
I resorted to watching someone roll past me inside the giant Rumble Strips drum, which had only recently adorned the merchandise tent ‘for display purposes only’...
It’s all in the planning as they say, but it’s possible the Field Day organisers took a trip whilst arranging the facilities this year: the loos, food outlets and bars were as rare as mountain gorillas - and just as hairy. Sound issues became a problem for many of the bands, including Goodbooks. What at first seemed to be a dodgy P.A. system was actually sound censorship by the local council. Appearing for the second time in twenty-four hours vocalist Max Cooke didn’t disguise his irritation at the municipal meddling. The Concretes had other concerns though. The band are still being haunted by last year’s sudden departure of lead vocalist Victoria Bergsman, although their rendition of ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ went a long way to exorcising her ghost. Foals, meanwhile, were still recovering from the Friday night bash. Yannis was overwhelmed by the huge following and mumbled, “all I can see is a sea of marshmallows…” – so that’s where all the drugs went! Electrelane received the most rapturous welcome of the day. After seeing so many bands full of bearded men, sharing a sweaty tent with an all-girl band brandishing guitars felt like heaven. Verity, Emma, Ros and Mia didn’t disappoint. Anyone lucky enough to squeeze in witnessed a feverish performance, with Mia giving her guitar the Hendrix treatment whilst writhing over an amp. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Hungry, thirsty, and with full bladder, the thought of sitting through a set by The Mystery Jets was about as appealing as the overflowing toilets. There is a limit to the amount of posh kids this council estate bloke can tolerate. Instead, Late Of The Pier provided a more earthly distraction with their raucous, bare-chested tunes and ghostly alien accomplice eerily wandering the stage. The choices for the final hour of Field Day included a seated Gruff Rhys, a pounding set from Justice or a resurgent Liars playing Germanic dance rock. Unfortunately, the noise abatement policy of the council made the decision academic. The end of festival party was well and truly pooped by the enforced volume controls, forcing the atmosphere to remain eerily subdued. I resorted to watching someone roll past me inside the giant Rumble Strips drum, which had only recently adorned the merchandise tent ‘for display purposes only’. He was sure to wake with a massive headache in the morning…but still not as big as the one Field Day will have next year if it fails to learn from this years disorganisation problems.

i'm sorry but there was no

i'm sorry but there was no excuse for the shambles that was field day. to make out it was simply the queues that ruined the day is rubbing salt in the wounds of those unfortunate to attend. that was just the tip of the iceberg. to make people tip out beer and refreshments at the gate only to have no decent facilities onsite was plain mean and cruel. It was straight out of nazi germany and could have easily been overturned as the problems became apparent very early on. greed i suspect. then there was the poor sound levels, slow motion bar staff, food and drink prices, half hour sets...

    Review and pics

I had similar experiences. Field Day claimed to be a one day music festival with the feel of a village fete. Accidentally stumbling on a crowd of women crouching behind the coconut shys urinating on the floor was not something I have ever seen at any ‘village fete’ I’ve been to in the home counties.

I have written my own full field day festival review and posted some photos of the 'psychadelic' queuing, if you were there you may well spot yourself!

    Field Day replies>>>

Thank you for attending our first field day. Hands up, we got swamped. Sorry. It was our first festival and there were clearly too many queues.

We did not oversell the event and the numbers of all toilets and bars were approved by the council, however we clearly didn't anticipate the demands on the bars from a field day crowd and it clearly wasnt anywhere near enough. Next year we will be at least doubling both bar and toilets.

We feel very disapointed about these problems and hope that it didn't affect your enjoyment of the music and other activities too much.

Thank you once again for attending the first field day, we will improve.

    Field day collective.

    - thanks Don (R)
