this weeks singles - jakobinarina, arcade fire, timbaland and more

Released: Mon, 2007/07/23 on
ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: JAKOBINARINA / THIS IS AN ADVERTISEMENT (EMI) “We are officially announcing a sell out!” scream Artrocker Club favourites Jakobinarina on this chaotic, hilarious message to their new record company. In the high speed art-punk jinks of the next two minutes, they announce their artistic redundancy, submit themselves up as corporate property, confess to taking part in mass brainwashing, and swear allegiance to coca cola. It’s irony of course- this tune is about as commercial as a shrivelled penis.
Top marks for not taking themselves too seriously...
. ARCADE FIRE / NO CARS GO (SONOVOX) The Arcade Fire are a wondrous band in danger of becoming a bit too slick and bombastic. Thankfully this song – a call to get the hell off planet earth before it goes up in flames - is pretty nifty. Accordions, choral sweeps and a sense of the cinematic all make for a spine tingling ride. Watch out though – a few more steps in this direction and they’ll have Andrew Lloyd Wobbly Chops Webber knocking on their door. . TIMBALAND / THE WAY I ARE (BLACKGROUND / INTERSCOPE) …In which Timbaland claims, not entirely believably, that he is skint. Before you go stroking your chin in slow motion, it is however just a metaphor and part of the bigger message that love is (or should be) unconditional of money. Which is good news for people like me. Keri Hilson’s crooning vox give this tune some fresh attire, and turn it into a passable summer squelcher. . TINY MASTERS OF TODAY / RADIO RIOT (MUTE IRREGULARS) Any tune that contains a solo consisting of mobile phone feedback, presumably in reverse, is fine by me. This tune is brimming with the kind of unconventional creativity that only people who work on instinct alone can produce – it could be some kind of Andy Warhol type Arts Factory hit. Meanwhile, the fact that their voices haven’t dropped makes them sound like some kind of cult Japanese punk group. . TURBO FRUITS / VOLCANO (ARK) We rather slagged this Be Your Own Pet spin off the other week, but this tune ‘aint so bad. It stomps around to a stoner groove, with vaguely amusing grumpy vocals chanting over the top. It sounds a bit like the Dandy Warhols but more piss takey, or perhaps Nick Cave but less righteous. Top marks for not taking themselves too seriously. . SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO / I BELIEVE (WITCHITA) You know the way those Brit Flicks portray kids on ecstasy by putting them in slow motion and making the camera all misty? This is kinda like that – a slightly hallucinogenic pill munching anthem. Stick Depeche Mode on a plane to Hawaii and they might come up with a similar beast.
