I’ve spent ages mulling over this band.
Having been a big fan of singer Andrew Manson’s previous musical incarnations. it’s important to do this one justice. It’s just proving so damned hard to describe or classify Otherpeople in any meaningful way.
From the band’s own description, Otherpeople have a member who came face to face with a burglar in his flat, and not only allowed him to disappear off with all of his flatmates belongings, but even donated a bag to make the process easier.. as well as a member who gave up his teaching profession after being assigned to a school that wasn’t all girls.
Manson is a unique character, with a host of idiosyncrasies that instantly mark him out from the usual generic-singer stereotype. Forget the pitch-perfect, predictable fare that is so prominent.. Instead, vibrating, insightful vocals give the impression of a social-commentator driven mad by things that happen around about.. someone trapped inside their own chaotic thought-process. Some people are just meant to be an off-the-wall singer in an off-mainstream band. The stranger side to Thom Yorke has to be in there somewhere surely.
As a list of drink choices are reeled off in ‘Wooplash’ (which you can download exclusively from Artrocker.com below) the real indie lifestyle that bands like the Dandy Warhols espouse comes to the forefront. This is one of over-sized jumpers and short haircuts. Not the twangy, guitar-based indie… but the one found in trendy areas of cool cities with obscure types of expensive wine in oblong glasses.
They’re down to support Wavves at the Arches in Glasgow on the 8th of November, then Nice n Sleazy’s with Johnny Foreigner on the 8th of December if you’re around the fair city on either date.
You can get the two-track-long download single on iTunes

If you google ‘Otherpeople’ you’ll not find them straight away, so follow a direct link to their Myspace here.
As the man himself says:
"I think there’s an old defunct band from LA called Other People too, who show up on Last FM. We spell it all one word so we are obviously totally different."
Or there’s always Facebook, if you’re that way inclined.
