Unsigned Band Spotlight: Pop Fosters

Where would we be today without the simple, scuzzy way of our punk fore-fathers? We certainly owe a great debt to their spikey hair and sneers.
Despite the faded cries that the genre is dead, there are still those who plunder away at the craft regardless. The young amongst us often are set on their path to alternative music fame by two chords and some angry words, so it’s not something to be dismissed lightly. The Pop Fosters are one such two-piece outfit from Wakefield who are carrying such a torch with their 1-2 minute janglings.

I’m really not all that big on the whole punk sound anymore to be fair. The problem wasn’t really genre; more that no-one ever really did it much better than the Sex Pistols. Whilst there were phases where the Exploited and the like seemed appealing, most bands sort of forgot to make their songs actually sound like anything.

However,  the bouncy punk riffs of a couple of their tracks remind me of the musical stylings of the one and only Art Brut - ‘Alcoholics Unanimous’ especially. Whilst it’s difficult to tie their sound down completely, as it seems a bit unsure of itself, there’s definitely something in there with this duo that hints at greater things to come. ‘Myopic’ in particular has all sorts of rythmical fuckabouts and weird harmony plays that make me think these guys could be a future, punkier version of the Victorian English Gentlemans Club.
