The fall season is now mingling with the winter season, which, for me, has resulted in throwing an extra blanket on my bed, dusting off the DVD of an ignited fireplace, and spending more time with That Ghost’s new record, Young Fridays. That Ghost is the alias for 18-year-old Ryan Schmale, a textbook DIY musician from Sonoma County, California who has already self-released three records and two EP’s before signing with Two Syllable Records. But while such prolificacy often leads to records weighed down by overabundant filler (I’m lookin’ at you, Robert Pollard…), Schmale has created something as wholly cohesive as it is charmingly unpolished. Pitchfork recently premiered the following video for Open Windows, a somber, shimmering lo-fi pop song that seems to perfectly fill that space between the falling leaves and the impending winter.

Backed by a bassist and drummer, That Ghost recently played a CMJ showcase at Piano’s and Two Syllable has graciously given us an exclusive video of Open Windows from that performance.
And since That Ghost does have other songs, a limited 7" single has been released for I Crossed Out The Options, a bit of a rocker that steps up the tempo several notches with its punchy rhythms and vibrantly distorted guitars. "You’re young and I’m getting old," Schmale sings. Just the opposite, I’d say. This kid’s just getting started.
