I’m liking the Monkees style indie beach pop of The Young Veins, even if it is a tad contrived. The band feature Ryan Ross and Jon Walker of Panic at the Disco, and some people seem to be upset because The Young Veins don’t really sound like them. That’s a shame, because if you can accept that they might want to do something different, you might enjoy the self consciously retro twinged sweetness of the ‘Veins.

Their debut album is out in the UK on July 5, and the press release promises "a stunning 29-minutes of deliberate and focused songcraft; concise pop and rock songs that embrace a dreamy California spirit but also epitomize Ross and Walker’s vast sphere of influence, ambition and artistry." Which is a somewhat wanky way of saying it’s a nicely put together album of catchy 60s pop with contemporary twists. I’m looking forward to hearing it.
