South London Spotlight: New Cross
That ‘short lived’ New Cross scene that helped spawn Art Brut, Bloc Party, The Violets et al with thanks to that now famous
Angular Records Sampler wasnt so short lived…the media came and went whipping it into a cornetto shaped buzz and then scurried over to Hoxton Square for frappacinos and sushi leaving the South East London district to carry on where it left off.
This weeks focus is on the renewed Club night
Chamber, having shifted from The Windmill In Brixton it now finds itself residing in the the surroundings of the New Cross Inn.

The monthly night provides an alternative take on the current musical climate and the next show on
Thursday 13th May see’s Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster’s recent support band
The Murder Act lend the No Wave meets Krautrock hands to the proceedings. Quietly they are building a formidable reputation for themselves with their dark twisted tones and long drawn out melodies.
In keeping with slow and grinding are up and coming doom merchants
M E R R I N who draw in influences from the likes of Om, Boris and Sunn O)). With songs nestling between 7 and 15 minute periods they refuse to be hurried which is a refreshing break from a lot of the current zippy music thats doing the rounds.
Miss Cosmos have been around for a little while now, progressively expanding their gentle but seductive psychedelic shoe-gaze. With Artrocker already on board in support for the band, it wouldnt be all too suprising to see 2010 a year where the band step up a gear.
And with Project:Komakino pulling out it leaves us with
Sunday Mourning. Being the brainchild of **k analog man Mark Wagner, the ethereal slow and inscessent beats projects images of a more primal Boards of Canada.
So here we are, the spirit of All Tomorrows Parties hunches itself in a New Cross drinking hole.
Until next week……
