I’ve always had a soft spot for Blur, ever since they let Graham Coxon flex his punk rock muscles a bit on Popscene. So I was fairly excited to hear their first new track in umpteen years.
A shame then, that A Fools Day sounds like an April 1st joke.
If that’s the point, then I guess they really don’t care any more and have all got their eyes on the huge bags of cash any imminent reunion is bound to give them.
Released to celebrate Record Store Day, A Fools Day is like a blog post put to music, with Damon Albarn sounding even more bored than usual. He recounts a daily routine as the band plod through some ineffectual indie pop. Let’s Wrestle had the same idea with ‘My schedule’ but made it into a song that’s a hundred times better. It honestly sounds like Blur are just taking the piss all the way to the bank. Not even a stylophone solo can save it.

Damon Albarn must not sleep. The Blur/Gorillaz frontman is always juggling a few dozen projects, and from the looks of things, we’ll hear more from a couple of them...
