Surfer Blood - Live at Pure Groove Records, London. Monday 8th February 2010
Surfer Blood? By now, whether you like it or not you’ve heard something about Surfer Blood. Subject of much internet hype/ blog hysteria (their debut ASTRO COAST being touted as the first great record of 2010) SB are a five piece native of West Palm Beach Florida. Coming of a gruelling second half of 2009, which saw them notoriously blitz the CMG Music Marathon in October, indie front runners Surfer Blood find themselves in London briefly before a return to the states for another extensive tour.

Numerous myspace listens had still left me undecided about SB’s music. To the weary among us, hype induces reluctance and caution! Cue an instore performance at Pure Groove Records, Faringdon, East London. Any illusion I had that a gig on a baltic Monday night might keep people away was dispelled as I rocked up late with camera in hand to a packed store. Surfer Blood waste little time in getting on with the job in hand, playing roughly 8 songs in a half hour to a subdued but appreciative gathering. Musically the band are young enough to get away with firmly wearing their influences on their sleeves. Drawing on the echo /reverb leanings of James Mercer’s SHINS, Surfer Blood’s shimmering guitar hooks and melodic pop sensibilities recall Pavement, Built to Spill and Weezer. While tonight they may be guilty of going through the paces, Surfer Blood have possessed enough talent and charm to win the crowd over, myself included, while at the same time justifying the dreaded hype. They might just go the distance…
