Guest top 10s: Pulled Apart By Horses

We’ve been going on about them all year - now the mighty Pulled Apart By Horses take turns to tell us what rings their collective bells.

1 - Future Of The Left

So the second FOTL album was released this year and we got to go on tour with them in the UK and abroad a few times and to be quite honest I genuinely think these guys are the tightest, loudest and kick ass rock bunch around. They seemed to write an album that somehow topped ‘curses’ (debut album) for me and that is one of my top albums of all time. Kelson, Falco and Jack. I and the other horses salute you!

2 - Cursive

Man, how many albums have they done? I don’t even know now. Seven? I saw them for the first time this year at Dot-to-Dot festival and Tim Kasher was pretty boozed up before hand by the side of the stage. I was waiting hoping to hear a good mix of old and new by the side of the stage and that’s exactly what I got, topped with the most adrenalin fuelled live performance I have seen this year by any front man. New album ‘Mama I’m swollen’ is an epic journey if you’ve not heard of them before.

3 - That Fucking Tank

So I know these fellas pretty well and to be honest Andy and James from TFT are one of the reasons i started playing in bands in Leeds. They are a really big influence on me and they never fail to amaze me on record and live. We hope to go on the road with them 2010 when we do our album tour if they can make it. Latest record ‘Tanknology’ on gringo records is a true representation of the live sets and their ability to riff the fuck out of anyone’s ear hole.

4 - Baddies

We played with these guys earlier this year and i remember being instantly struck by how catchy their tunes are. After getting to know them over the summer (we’ve played a lot of the same festival bills this year!) and seeing them live numerous times we were all totally converted. They play great pop songs but with balls out power. They totally combine the best bits of bands like futureheads, the jam and even talking heads. They also make you want to cause mischief when they play, i don’t know why this is…but its definitely a good thing!

5 - Shield Your Eyes

Hands down, my new favourite band in the world. I can’t even begin to explain how fucking brilliant these guys are! They totally defy convention and never stick to one formula; it’s abrasive, out of tune and absolutely ace. Like I say, it’s very hard to describe this band in words alone so just buy ‘Shield em’ (their most recent album) and have your mind blown.

6 - Grammatics

Without sounding too biast (as they’re all good buddies of ours) I speak for myself and everyone else in the ‘Horses’ crew by saying their self titled debut album has been played endlessly on our ipod’s and stereos since we got our grubby little paws on it! The album is a piece of artwork and will always remain a favourite to me. Also go and see them live as they’re just as epic! We’ve even dedicated one of our latest single’s to Grammatics bassist, Rory O’Hara - due to his cranial prowess and pathway of beautiful misery.

7 - Pissed Jeans

I had heard of Pissed Jeans a while ago but it took me ages to actually get round to listening to them. Their latest album ‘King of Jeans’ is absolutely awesome and totally floats my boat. It’s new, fresh, raw and brutal, yet it has the same buzz of some of the early 80’s hardcore punk bands like Black Flag and Flipper and also a tip of the cap to ‘The Jesus Lizard.’ I’ve been pumping myself up to this album before we’ve played gigs to get the adrenaline going. It makes you feel as if you’ve just been given a lethal beef injection!

8 - The Brownies

We played after them at The Great Escape. When we first got there we were all really hung over, well, I was still drunk of course, and we were a bit tour worn. So generally when it’s that situation it’s hard to be too enthusiastic. But I watched them and I was totally captivated for the whole set. They just have that on stage presence that you can’t formulate, their music kicks dicks in, and the lyrics are brutally honest. They gave me a copy of their album and I’ve been listening to it lots since. Get it!

9 - Monster Killed By Laser

An incredibly underated band who have been going for years and have developed into a group of highly talented musicians. I can’t say that 2009 has been an epic year for them because they only gig sporadically (catch one if you can.) However, they finished recording their album this year, which I’ve had a sneaky peak at; It’s immense. It’s like a film soundtrack that needs no film.

10 - Monotonix

A three peice band from Israel who got banned from playing their own country, and responded with "lets take it on the road".
