Band of the Week: Songs

You can consider this as one of the reasons I chose ‘Sup Magazine as one of the Top 10 Music Blogs of 2009, they are constantly breaking bands like this from other countries that have so much to offer to us. Recently I was reading their site when I came across this interview with a young Australian band named Songs. I clicked on the link to their MySpace page, listened to the catchy pop rock tunes they had up there and fell in love with the casual sounds and casual demeanor the band exuded throughout their interview. And let me tell, it is a long as fuck interview with lots of great pictures, but I read every word of that fucker like it were my job and left feeling like I found one of my new favorite bands!

The reading and the the MySpace of course led to the downloading of more of their music, namely the self-titled full length they put out this year, which should have been on my Best of ‘09 list if I hadn’t made it already. Sometimes not procrastinating sucks (but it’s rare). Well, listening to the full scope of their album there is no doubt that Songs are destined to become a new favorite of mine. Their songs a practically perfect, straddling the line between lo-fi, garage rock, and more polished, arena worthy pop rock. Everything has a catchy vibe to it, whether it is the straight forward guitar riffs, the steady churning of the rhythms, or the way the guy/girl vocals play off of each other, there really is nothing on this record that will not draw you in immediately.

The songs themselves are about everyday normal shit, laundry, feeding your pet, hanging with friends, and that makes the band a hundred times more real than half the crap that is shelled out right now. But the pairing of the mundane song ideas with rad, rocking music is what takes Songs to a whole other level. Obviously their are influences piled in here, specifically the Dunedin sound of the early 80’s (The Clean, The Gordons, etc.) and the strains of early 90’s indie rock (Pavement, duh), but they capture those sounds and turn it into a modern day world of chores and technology and social interaction.

Obviously the only flaw in finding this band now is that we’ve missed the chance to be listening to them for the past few months and the opportunity to tell you all about them. But since they are on the other side of the world we will chalk this one up to distance and start enjoying the shit out of these tunes every chance we get, I suggest you do the same with your time!
