“The English are the greatest sea pirates who ever have lived.” Conor and myself ruminated while taking a midnight stroll on the River Themes’ banks and discovering a piece of architecture pillaged from ancient Egyptian ruins and propped up on the river’s banks as a gift to the Queen Mother, “The old wrinkly one.”
Our first impressions of England related to CC TV. A popular bumper sticker we once scoffed at back home in the United States was given new credibility once we reached Dover’s white shores. “George Orwell was right,” the bumper sticker reads.
There are more closed circuit television surveillance cameras in the United Kingdom then any other country on earth. Since we are about four hundred million in population in the US, the UK at about sixty million, this was a very disturbing discovery to say the least. “What are the British so scared of?” we wondered.
Holy Ghost Revival have gleaned a new respect for baked beans. Many of us once thought eating baked beans with breakfast to be a disgusting habit, but now almost all of us enjoy baked beans and eggs along with earl grey tea and a splash of milk, throw a little bacon in there and you have an English breakfast improvised upon by six Americans.
All in all, living in London has been a positive experience; we’ve made friends with many Spanish, Portuguese, and Brazilians.
