Waylon Thornton & The Heavy Hands - Pure Evil

If you’re looking for the right record for your Halloween Party this weekend, you should look no further than Pure Evil.
10 perfect hillbilly garage rock classics, infused with eerie David Lynchian atmosphere and scary vibes. It’s a record that makes you want to dance, clap your hands, shake your hips and check under your bed for dwarves who talk backwards.
Each tune is sparse, loose and cool as fuck. The drums are hit heavy, the guitar has that righteous 50s reverbatone sound. And Waylon’s voice is just the right kind of manic, with Screaming Jay Hawkins hollers and Little Richard falsettos.
Opener ‘You ain’t no mountain’ sets the tone. It’s almost old testament in the kind of fury Waylon conjures up. It’s Goliath shouting at David, and then kicking his puny little ass. It’s the voice of a gun slinging preacher in a spaghetti western, furious at being challenged by an unworthy opponent.
"God, as you are my witness. Teach my brother a lesson. Let him learn the ways of the mountain".
Awesome stuff.
‘Arcane luv’ gets the party started proper - the wild wails mix with a rock n roll stomp that commands you to move - it’s fury you can dance to baby.
The LP doesn’t let up for the rest of its 15 minute duration. Even the Mariachi-esque White Bones soundtracks a desert nightmare: "white bones in the night, led you astray / white bones in the night, took you away."
By the time we get to the last track - Monster in my Pocket - all of this scary shit has finally driven Waylon mental. It’s the sound of the last thread of sanity snapping
It’s a strong contender for album of the year. And what’s more - you can download it for free from Waylon’s website.
Go get it now, what are you waiting for?!!
Despite the joy of getting something so cool for free, I personally am looking forward to getting my hands on a vinyl copy. Any labels interested in releasing this on vinyl should get in touch with Waylon.
Pure Evil? Pure genius!
