Modern Fever – the debut EP offering from one-man-band Jonnythefirth is a five track, distorted western-riffed beastie.
The repetitive (in the best possible way) overdriven guitar, along with the thundering claps and crashes to accompany it have got echoes of the Archie Bronson Outfit – ironically the biggest likeness is to their ‘Modern Lovers’ track, which is a lyric used in the title track of the EP. Speaking of the title, it’s not something I warm to immediately – a bit clichéd you could say. Modern Fever? It sounds like something that must have been used before somewhere; an old concept.
However, the music isn’t boring, even though it could quite easily be. The creative method of recording the whole thing on your own means there’s a whole lot of extra ditties that are thrown in to the mix because… well, it’s a whole lot easier when you don’t have a psycho bass-player or drummer to contend with. As a result, you find yourself asking – how the hell did he make that sound?
All things considered, the prophetic, end-of-days style wist that accompanies the sound of the tracks sucks you in fairly readily, and before long you’ll be singing along to the refrain of ‘Devil On My Back…’ like a not-so-old old-timer.
The EP is out on October the 5th – details on the Myspace
