wetdog, jay reatard, tokyo police club and more - singles for THE week beginning june 23!

Released: Mon, 2008/06/23 on various indie schmindies
ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: WETDOG / ALIBI (ANGULAR)

It’s Deranged, it’s squelchy, it’s post-punkin’ – and thanks to these ladies, it’s single of the week. This features a nice selection of doom-laden bass, off-kilter guitars loops and some half-jabbered lyrics.

Judging from this murky ditty, you’d believe any word that came out of their mouths -possibly through fear and sheer intimidation. If only all bands rattled like this.
The Dirty pretties will be doing football anthems soon, mark my words...
JAY REATARD / ALWAYS WANTING MORE (MATADOR) Jay’s dissatisfied ‘60s pop makes me want to go on an adventure. For a song that barely touches two minutes, it manages to twist and turn at least three times over. Therefore… it’s the runner up single of the week!! BARRINGTONE / SNAKE IN THE GRASS (THIS IS MUSIC) This starts off with a destructive drum breakdown, before embarking on a course of minimal pop and electronic jingle jangle. It’s impressive to see a band get so excited about the weather, as Barringtone hail “Thunder, thunder… Wahwhoooo!” Blimey, calm down! DIRTY PRETTY THINGS / TIRED OF ENGLAND (VERTIGO) Gosh darn it - this is dross. At least when Mozza sang of glorious blighty he did it with a sarcastic spin. The Dirty pretties will be doing football anthems soon, mark my words. TOKYO POLICE CLUB / IN A CAVE (MEMPHIS INDUSTRIES) The drums may be punchy and the riff may get your head bobbing – but surely people get into music for something more than meagre reactions? This leaves me as tepid as horseracing on the TV. GLASVEGAS / GERLADINE (SANE MAN) This is a big, ambitious and slightly dirty wall of sound affair. Somehow James Allan manages to re-imagine hideously sad lives, wrapping his Glaswegian tones around the grandiose sky-facing pop tales. This time it’s about a social worker – but we bet she’s not really called Geraldine. RADIOHEAD / BODYSNATCHERS (XL) Just as pent up and pensive as ever, Thom wails manically all over this - the fuzziest Radiohead guitar song this side of 2000. It makes a nice change from all that spectral stuff, but still it could afford to be a little more off its hook.
