elle milano

Thu, 2008/06/19 - Artrocker Brighton @ The Water Margin
ARTROCKER RATING:
Despite playing to a room of less than thirty people, Elle Milano played a frenzied and engaging set in the basement venue of the new Artrocker night at the Water Margin, Brighton, on Thursday night. Promoting their 2008 album ‘Acres of Dead Space Cadets’ the indie/electro Brighton trio combined melodic ambience with frantic fits of musical electricity, proving popular with the kind of music fans whose interest stretches beyond the traditional indie box.
They fit in perfectly at the new Artrocker Brighton, which mixes up low ceilings with even lower lighting.
The exhausting energy of the band, exaggerated by the Karen O-esque backing vocals of bassist Chloe, gave Elle Milano a dynamic attitude – and the group were undeterred by the low turnout; “I just enjoy playing our music, wherever the band happen to be”, reasoned Chloe. Speaking to artrocker.com, local lad Andy (who also happens to play guitar in the up-and-coming Brighton band Maths Class), had more encouraging words to say. “A band this good could play to 5 people or 500. Either way everyone would be moved by them – but small venues like this let you appreciate the music for what it is”. The group’s performance ranged from furious drum solos to emotional ‘singing-with-your-eyes-closed’ vocals from front man Adam M. As they played on, it became rapidly clear that previous comparisons to Radiohead, Nirvana and Hadouken! summed them up perfectly. Since forming at university in Leicester, Elle Milano have clearly become an excitingly fresh band with a unique and adaptable identity. They fit in perfectly at the new Artrocker Brighton, which mixes up low ceilings with even lower lighting. Brighton two-piece Blood Red Shoes followed up the evening well with an inoffensive yet enjoyable DJ set. PHOTO: VICTORIA ADRIANNA
