A husband and wife duo releasing an EP? It always seems a bizarre concept to me to be involved in a band with someone you’re that close to, but must make for an interesting in-group dynamic. The Andreottis are the ‘Grizzly Owls’, and have just recently released this four track EP off their own backs, and it makes for some pleasant listening.
Title track ‘I Am A Shootist’ has some hauntingly strange vocals that sound as if Kate Bush has been thrown into a Western movie and given some acid. Jenny Andreotti gives the impression of being in touch with all the little woodland creatures, in a quaint yellow dress. No, really. If little bunny foo foo was to run through the forest, he’d probably bump into the Grizzly Owls.
I don’t know much (read: anything) about country and western music, due in no small part to my hatred of it and so can’t give long-winded comparisons or metaphors with regards to the genre, but this manages to calm the soul on a day where you’ve been cancelled on and are left facing a long, drawn out, boring existence. This EP speaks with wist – the sort of wisdom that doesn’t tell you what to do, merely makes you think – plain, simple insight. It makes me want to sigh, in a slightly sad, but good way. It’s inoffensive and easy to listen to, but not boring in the slightest. An EP is too short - full album please?
