Shoot That Poisoned Arrow

Eliza The Arrow

Eliza The Arrow
Genre: Big Beat / Electroacoustic
From: Nashville, Tennessee, United States

Nashville idiosyncratic popsters Eliza The Arrow took time out from their archery practice and listening to obscure Kate Bush b-sides to give the Devil an insight into what makes them tick. Find out more about the strangest place they’ve played, who their biggest influences are and how to beat the credit crunch in an Eliza stylee.

The Devil - Eliza The Arrow is an unusual name? What other names did you ponder before deciding on Eliza The Arrow?

Eliza The Arrow
- Is it an unusual name? We were both sick of band names so it was more of just playing around with different variations of the name. We knocked around Elizabeth Grace and Eliza before we decided on EtA. I was told by an astrologer once that I present myself to the world as an archer. It’s kind of the mask I wear, I guess. It only seemed befitting to put it out there and make it so.

The Devil - Who are the band’s biggest influences?

Eliza The Arrow - Francis Bacon, David Lynch, Laurie Anderson, Gerard Richter – our friends are huge influences for us. The people we love and make dinner for. The people we make the bed for. And maybe just the same would be our enemies, the nay-sayers. Love & Hate -the meat of life.

The Devil - What was the first record the band members ever bought?

Eliza The Arrow - Janet Jackson’s Control, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Dave Brubeck Trio’s Time Out

The Devil - What makes Eliza The Arrow stand out from the millions of other bands in the world? What makes you unique?

Eliza The Arrow - I don’t think that’s for us to say really. It’s subjective and I don’t think I could try and sell myself that way. I could say ‘oh well, our instruments are made out of chocolate!’ or something…..but that’s not true. I hope everyone can make that decision for themselves…I just can’t speculate on my own uniqueness. We are just who our hearts and flesh tell us to be.

The Devil - What’s the strangest place you’ve ever played and would you go back there?

Eliza The Arrow - Many years ago we would play this town in Georgia called Augusta…in what used to be a porno theatre. It had such a strange vibe there – the people in the town were so incredibly open and wonderful though. I would definitely go back there.

The Devil - Other than Eliza The Arrow who are the most exciting bands on the US music scene at the moment?

Eliza The Arrow - Grizzly Bear, Cortney Tidwell, Laurie Anderson, Neko Case, and this great band from Chicago called Blue Zone.

The Devil - If you weren’t in Eliza The Arrow how would you keep yourself occupied?

Eliza The Arrow - I would probably be a daydreamer.

The Devil - What are the band doing to beat the credit crunch? Any tips on saving money for the Devil’s readers?

Eliza The Arrow - Hmmm. What are we doing to beat the credit crunch? Haggling..at every angle. We even haggle with ourselves. Tips: Stay at home and make YouTube videos. Stay at home and make deals on Craigslist. Stay at home and cook.

The Devil - If you were interviewing yourself what would be your killer question and how would you answer it?

Eliza The Arrow - My question would be: Why do you do what you do? My answer would be: because my blood would boil right out of my pores if I didn’t. Because If I didn’t I wouldn’t be able to look at myself in the mirror. Because music is fascinating and I’m in love with it. (What a great answer - The Devil)

The Devil - Anything else you’d like to say the the Devil’s readers?

Eliza The Groom - Thank you and goodnight. Sweet dreams everyone.
