Victorian English Gentlemens Club, with support from We Are The Physics and Ex Wives
Glasgow King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut – 5th August 2009
Every so often a gig comes along where both the support bands really fit with the headliners. There’s nothing worse than going along for a metal act and having a pop-punk band support for example. Luckily tonight, not only were the bands all extremely complimentary of each other, but they were all connected in some way, with the Ex Wives drummer sporting a We Are The Physics t-shirt, and WATP/Victorian English Gentlemens Club label-buddies on ThisIsFakeDIY.
Ex Wives were scuzzy clunk-rock, with tracks such as ‘I punched a girl in the face’ standing out in particular, as well as songs about ‘Seamen. Lots of Seamen. Russian Semen.’ Sadly Tuts was pretty dead at this point, but the applause that was available was as enthusiastic as it could be. I even got a free mini-CD because they liked my face. How sweet.

WATP brought their head-extending, leg-shaking brand of ‘mutant science punk rock’ to the stage next, to a markedly busier venue. Having seen them countless times, the jokes and stage-banter was familiar, but seeing Michael M (of unknown age) tell the crowd that if they ‘want to have a wee mosh pit, a bit of a fight; punch some people in the eyes and face..’ then to go ahead, never fails to bring a smile to a smile to my face. It’s hard not to; they’re just so damn charming.
Having failed to raise any body-crashing, frontman Michael threw himself into the foray, handing his bass to one of two very-enthusiastic fans in the front row, whilst another one.. well. He lay ontop of him gyrating. There’s a picture somewhere with a beautiful sex-face from the Physic.

VEGC took their positions amidst the flowery decorations, looking beautiful. The girls of the band have a special place in my heart – Louise with her intense, almost psychotic staring off into the distance, which gives a palpable sexual tension to the whole affair. However, If I could, I would marry Steph on guitar – bouncing around the stage with electric or acoustic in tow. I’d probably marry Adam too infact.

The way his voice warbled, yelped and purred through the set whilst the girls swam in in harmony afterwards worked even better live, as their positions gave added oomph to the effect. I’m a sucker for bands that use their vocals as an instrument rather than just the usual predictable notes that any of us could pick, and VEGC use them amazingly.
A lot of the set came from the new album, with ‘Parrot’ as one of the definite highlights. (the review of the LP will be up on here next week – watch this space)
I will gladly take all of the VEGC you can throw at me – bring on the gigs, photos, interviews, releases, and wedding rings.
Find more photos from the gig here.
