ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: BROKEN RECORDS / IF THE NEWS MAKES YOU SAD, DON’T WATCH IT (YOUNG TURKS)
Broken Records prove that if you put seven well-dressed Edinburgh gents in a room, they’ll come up with a truly inspirational track laced with hints of Arcade Fire and Bruce Springsteen. Genuinely phenomenal stuff which should be mandatory listening for everyone, everywhere.
Prepare to be repeatedly singing the chorus in your head until you finally go mad...
CAJUN DANCE PARTY / THE RACE (XL)
It’s all minor chords and driving bass lines when it comes to Cajun Dance Party. ‘The Race’ is an amalgamation of all the better aspects of the current British indie scene, and even if there is the faintest hint of The Kooks around the middle eight, we can probably forgive them… right?
CATS IN PARIS / FOXES (AA)
Right, who’s thieved my copy of ‘Myths Of The Near Future’?! Cats in Paris, I’m looking in your direction. What’s that you say? Oh, my mistake. I thought I heard it coming out of your speakers, but you say this is your song? Oh, right… carry on.
THE ENVY CORPS / STORY PROBLEM (VERTIGO)
Now this is more like it. ‘Story Problem’ has a definite Modest Mouse feel to it, with that familiar snared hi-hat and melodic bass line prominent throughout. It’s a solid effort which, for all its similarities, never feels like a struggling third-rate imitation. Great stuff.
TOKYO POLICE CLUB / TESSELLATE (SADDLE CREEK)
TPC are essentially the band you wish the likes of Good Shoes and The Cribs could be; witty, solid musicians with great songs to back up any initial bravado. ‘Tessellate’ is a chock-full of sweeping guitar and piano melodies which provide several reasons to be very exited about their forthcoming debut LP.
WE ARE THE PHYSICS / YOU CAN DO ATHLETICS (THIS IS FAKE D.I.Y)
This is the musical incarnation of an ADHD sufferer who’s been given a large bag of sugar and a big open field. It’s frantic and a little unnerving, but there is something ridiculously infectious about it. Prepare to be repeatedly singing the chorus in your head until you finally go mad.
CUT COPY / LIGHTS AND MUSIC (MODULAR)
‘Light’s and Music’ is a synth-heavy slice of electro with a kinky bass groove that’ll be filling dance floors across the country. Think of The Faint or The Rapture (without all the tight jeans and pointy shoes) and you’re in the right neighbourhood.
INNERPARTYSYSTEM / DON’T STOP (ISLAND)
Innerpartysystem have gone for a grandiose production that builds and builds, only to be let down by some slightly cliché-ridden lyrics. The vocal performance and arrangement are actually very good, but mentions of the road being paved with gold “to glorify my platinum soul” do become rather tiresome.
PENDULUM / PROPANE NIGHTMARES (EAR STORM)
Australia’s premier chart-happy drum n’ bass botherers are back with another thumping track which reaches a Depeche Mode-like state by way of Mariachi horns and an awful lot of bass. It’s catchy, but I’m not sure that’s what people were really looking for when they ‘invented’ drum n’ bass…
