sky larkin

Mon, 2008/04/14 - Brixton Windmill
ARTROCKER RATING:
Blame London Transport! There’s barely time to scrub off the grime of the daily grind before we’re off out south of the river. Suddenly we’re in Brixton, it’s still daylight and Sky Larkin are taking to the stage early to ensure that the twee audience catch their last train back. It’s an understated start. Katie is quietly determined through opener ‘Pica’, and clings to the mic during ‘Antibodies’ - but takes her time to warm up. After politely thanking Los Campesinos “for letting us play their living room”, she enthuses about the cosy familiarity of playing pubs.
Nestor’s been mouthing the lyrics throughout the set - possibly as an incantation to enslave the innocent Campesinos fans...
The dusk gradually gives way to darkness, and something strange is afoot. Drummer Nestor is changing. He nods and grimaces eerily as he attacks ‘One Of Two’. Katie is also transforming. Her nervous concentration is giving way to a confident bounce and a faux-stuttering “the last man standing has wo-ah-ah-on…” Everything suddenly becomes a lovely clatterpop noise. Katie plugs their new covers EP. Nestor made the sleeves - out of the boiled up bones of small children…probably. So we’d all better buy one. Photobucket Dance To The Radio compilation song ‘Summit’ is all jangly hooks - like The Sundays with attitude; while new song ‘Matador’ shows similar indie-pop promise. Douglas adds an occasional garnish of keyboard swirls to his bubbling bass and joins a guitar-toting Katie. Both obey the drummer’s command. Nestor’s been mouthing the lyrics throughout the set - possibly as an incantation to enslave the innocent Campesinos fans. But rest assured - the drummer is in charge tonight. As ‘Molten’ provides the crashing finale, he throws himself face first into his drums. It’s a Trojan trick! The niceness of Sky Larkin may have sucked us in - but their drummer is mental… They’re an imperfect triangle for these imperfect times. Now where’s that Travelcard… PHOTOS: SALLY SAVEALL
