THE long blondes
Tue, 2008/04/08 - Manchester Academy 2
ARTROCKER RATING:
So, the mavericks of vintage style are back with their new album ‘Couples’. And you’ll need those quotation marks - because the two pairs of couples that made up the band have now in fact - broken up. Where’s the romance of rock and roll gone?
There is one ’couple’ that has remained however: Kate Jackson and her audience. Flat-caps are thrown on stage to replace her tragicallyy declining beret collection (how sadly Northern of us… )
The strongest tracks from the last album survive to tell the tale...
So with a great rapport running through the rest of the glamour punk crusaders, and the music still being strong - it all means that we can all be friends with The Long Blondes for an hour or so.
And with friends such as these we get the full works. The Erol Alkan produced ‘Couples’ produces stand out tracks like ‘Guilt’ (“‘So tell me when you’re out next / So I don’t go out too / And make a fool of myself’) which is smothered in 80’s synth and lyrics chocked full of self deprecation.
‘We’re all going to Hell’ is another track that plays well on stage - laced in Jackson’s sultry and smoother vocals - until fractious guitars batter them up and set the song truly on fire.
The strongest tracks from the last album survive to tell the tale - ‘You Could have Both’ encasing the audience in alluring distortion through the infamous “What about us?” dialogue moment between Dorian and Kate- with a tantalizing chant from ‘Fulwood Babylon’ also lurking into the mix. “Just teasing,” Jackson smirks.
True story too - with a one song encore of a rapturous Lust in the Movies getting the audience lusting for the Blondes instead. An inevitable circumstance really…
