Released: Mon, 2008/04/07 on various indie schmindies
ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: ¡FORWARD RUSSIA! / BREAKING STANDING (COOKING VINYL)
Artrocker.com’s new best friends Forward Russia have always had a knack for seamlessly blending experimental influences with conventional indie, and ‘Breaking Standing’ is glorious demonstration of how wonderful this can be.
In amongst the effects-laden guitars and vocal yelps are several very good reasons to be excited about their forthcoming album. Lovely stuff indeed.
this has the feel of a slightly watered down Biffy Clyro to it – ‘Biffy Lite,’ if you will...
GREEN MAN SAYS GO / DANCEFLOOR (SELF RELEASE)
GMSG’s indie-come-electro approach means they sound rather like Arctic Monkeys’ jilted ex-lover and Shy Child’s new one night stand. ‘Dancefloor’’s chorus feels a little out of place as it leans bizarrely towards the post-hardcore/emo end of the spectrum, but additional songs ‘Shout Out’ and ‘Hide Seek’ show great promise.
RAYMOND AND MARIA / IT COULD HAVE BEEN YOU (BUTTERFLY)
Fiddles, acoustic guitars and a cutesy vocal all give Raymond and Maria’s ‘It Could Have Been You’ an undeniably Scandinavian quality. The lyrics are a little suspect in places, but there’s something about their innocent brand of indie-pop that will have you returning for repeat listens.
BLACK KIDS / I’M NOT GONNA TEACH YOUR BOYFRIEND HOW TO DANCE WITH YOU (ALMOST GOLD)
Oh dear. They may not want to teach peoples’ boyfriends how to dance, but if someone feels like telling them how to write a song, that’d be marvellous. On the evidence of this single the band only got as far as ‘Cure, The’ in the music encyclopaedia before pumping out a mediocre version of the said band’s worst work.
FREE BLOOD / GRUMPY (ADVENTURES CLOSE TO HOME)
‘Grumpy’ may be best described as a sonic assault with more sound effects than that fella out of Police Academy. Add a dash of soulful vocals and you’ve arrived at an experimental concoction that’ll have you reaching for the hangover medicine in the morning.
CLOCKS / OLD VALVE RADIO (ISLAND)
The Epsom indie-poppers return with the follow up to the cracking BBC-bothering tune ‘All I can.’ The rattling guitars and catchy melodies are still in full flow, and whilst it does perhaps lack the same bite as their debut, they’re still a great prospect for 2008.
THE RUSHES / CORNERS (ISLAND)
This minor chord laden ditty has the feel of a slightly watered down Biffy Clyro to it – ‘Biffy Lite,’ if you will. ‘Corners’ is laced with catchy melodies and fairly solid vocals, but it’s just a little too ‘polished’ for the edgy sound they seem to want to achieve.
