ARTROCKER RATING:
Neon Neon appear to have come the whole hog, from implausible half-rap electro collaboration to chic debut UK gig in a superclub. But will the click tracks and flamboyant 1980s vocals come off in these waters? One glance at the welsh psychedelic wonder that is Gruff Rhys indicates all. Beaming and bedecked in a suitably nostalgic cream suit he looks positively at home, introducing new single ‘Raquel’ as his ode to Raquel Welch. Its all perfectly timed bongo clics and popping basslines, with Rhys’ crooning sauntering above. It’s almost possible to imagine this as the soundtrack in some kind of Top Gun remake.
for a song based around Princess Leia fantasies it ain’t half bad...
Showcasing the melodious offerings from the album ‘Stainless Style’, Cate Le Bon joins Gruff and Boom Bip to provide clipped voyeurism to ‘I Lust U’, a song which can’t fail to induce body jerking, even if the sweat pit makes this a wee bit difficult.
‘Told Her On Alderaan’ is too cool for school, but also a fraction too heavy in its use of shoulder-padded generational influence. Nonetheless for a song based around Princess Leia fantasies it ain’t half bad, and fully embraces the pop idiom.
In a c-list celebrity moment, the aptly “untamed disgrace”- Akira The Don - takes up spitting duties on ‘Sweat Shop’ which winds up sounding fairly minimal but no less pleasantly surprising. And the guests keep coming: Romeo and Angela of the Magic Numbers step up to offer harmonies on closer ‘Stainless Style’. The pair are inaudible, but this does nothing to detract from the sleek and repetitive tribal electro stomper.
Tightly tuned, clean and club-hitting, there’s greater things afoot for these boys as long as they can withstand the summertime drive-along and resist absorbing up too much 80s. Gruff – put down the bryll cream, your hair is fine as it is.
