THE black keys, speck mountain, gnarls barkley and more - singles for THE week beginning march 24th!
Released: Mon, 2008/03/24 on various indie schmindies
ARTROCKER RATING:
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: THE BLACK KEYS / STRANGE TIMES (FAT POSSUM RECORDS)
Coming atcha like a dark and stormy version of the White Stripes, this lead single from the duo’s forthcoming
LP is tantalizing stuff. Dangermouse’s production adds a sheen of haunted gospel to the choruses, but for the most part the band are left to their own raw devices.
Meanwhile if you have a look at their
website, you’ll see they’ve installed an alien invasion arcade game! Which always helps when you’re schmoozing whoever decides what single of the week is.
The more experimental this band become, the more fun they sound like they're having...
MY FEDERATION / DON’T WANNA DIE (CHRYSALIS)
Another excellent single, this fuzzed up indie-pop song buzzes along like a cheerful electricity pylon. The chorus falls just short of stimulating the endorphins, but considering it’s about not wanting to die, that’s probably just as well.
LOOK SEE PROOF / DO YOU THINK IT’S RIGHT (WEEKENDER)
Attack! Scream! Breath like Darth Vader on his deathbed! Now scream! This is a pretty hyper art-disco number that could do with a slightly more astonishing tune. Still, gimme a few cocktails to slurp on and I’d happily shake my loot to it.
SPECK MOUNTAIN / HEY MOON (PEACE FROG)
Welcome to the sunshine opium den! This track has all the lazy, hazy, shexshy charm of a Cowboy Junky at a Trinity Session. If you can’t quite catch the 40 winks you’re after, bung this on and watch the sheep fly.
GNARLS BARKLEY / RUN (WARNER BROS)
The more experimental this band become, the more fun they sound like they’re having. This funky Church sermon goes crazy with bongos and hand claps, while Cee-Lo chips in with some frantic MCing. Not a classic, but still a welcome return.
CLINIC / THE WITCH (DOMINO)
Appropriately for the lead single of Clinic’s “Summer album”, this has 1960s acid rock at it’s core. It may not add a great deal to the Jefferson Airplane template, but it jingles it’s jangles in all the right places.
YAEL NAIM & DAVID DONATIEN / NEW SOUL (ATLANTIC)
Our writer Rob Hastings was wondering the other day what’s happened to classic indiepop. Oi! Rob! Get your bum over here, this band have got their grubby mitts all over it. This twinkly trombone pop tune is cute, melodic, and getting it’s leg over with Apple Mac adverts.
