The Widow Babies

Fly Me To The Moon

From the dirty streets of L.A, The Widow Babies are back. The band announced today that their debut record titled Jetpacks will come out in July via 01Factory Records. I first wrote about The Widow Babies in September 2008 when they released their first EP; a concept EP paying homage to legendary Stooges [Minutemen, fIREHOSE too of course - ed] bassist Mike Watt.

The new songs aren’t as intense as the The Mike Watt EP material, there’s a much cleaner sound that hears all the instrumental (and vocal) parts pulled together in a more rhythmic fashion. Elise McCuthen sings rather than screaming and the rhythm section has better timing. Even though I liked the chaos of their first EP, the new material shows that the band has spent a lot of time working on the structure of their music. With the release of Jetpack in July they will be able to stand proud alongside their L.A friends Mika Miko, No Age and The Mae Shi; all products of the wonderful L.A all-ages scene based around cult venue The Smell.

You can listen to three tracks from Jetpacks on the band’s myspace page. Below is a track from The Mike Watt EP.
