It’s not for the cock, it’s not for the Fiction

Fiction

Fiction are a new four piece collective of musicians from London. Boring part over, let’s now delve into what makes them really quite a fucking exciting band.

Firstly, they manage to feature the combination of the unhinged yelps of the dearly missed Joe Strummer with the sardonic tones of a young, smirking David Byrne whilst, all the while, sounding fresher than a newly leaked report on an MPs extravagant expense claim.

Secondly, the way their guitars often move in a rudimentary groove around basic drumbeats before eventually weaving into something quite spectacular is…well, quite spectacular. In one song, Fiction are prone to move from tight-as-a-vice Talking Heads style guitars all the way to the other end of some mythical guitar playing spectrum to sun kissed jangles. “Curiosity”, the song in point, is a lot of things but mainly kind of illogical in a really, really fun way.

Cross Purposes”, meanwhile, is almost like some beered up skanking skin heads meeting, and inevitably beating up, a group of pop geniuses in what ends up as a full on, unchecked knees up.

Instead of scrabbling around for a pun involving the act of writing about a band called Fiction, I’m going to just end by suggesting that you see them at Off Modern at Corsica Studios in Elephant and Castle on 28th of May (or any of the other upcoming dates). Apparently there’s, whisper it, “industry interest” surrounding this band and anyone with even a couple of frazzled brain cells can tell that they’re a cut above the rest of the hoards of unsigned bands around London, so do yourself a favour and see them soon.
