ARTROCKER RATING:
You know those times when you slam an album in your ghetto blaster, dying for it to make you dance like a maniac, spilling cherry Lambrini as you go? Yeah? Well this ain’t it. Youthmovies may want all your attention, like the greedy little beggars they are - but there’s certainly no room for Lambrini-sipping here. The sticker on the back of this album says these Oxford boys are a ‘convergence of musical styles, often all within the same track.’ That’s certainly true, but it makes for a jilted listen. Your ears battle with layers of different sounds that sometimes come together, but more often feel like they’re pulling in opposite directions.
it’s not easy or for the faint-hearted - infact it could almost be the precursor to a panic attack...
It’s like they’ve put the album on back to front. Track one, ‘Magdalen Bridge’, is good when it gets going (it even has some brass thrown in - hell yeah!), but to get to the good bit you have to wade through a long, pointless stretch of noise. The kind of noise that’s usually the precursor to a ‘secret’ track at the end of an album.
‘If You’d Seen A Battlefield’ works the best in terms of their ‘adventurous blend’. And after a few listens it becomes easier for your assaulted ear drums to digest. But still, it’s not easy or for the faint-hearted - infact it could almost be the precursor to a panic attack.
Oh God, how I wish Steve Lamacq was right when he described this band as “a post-hardcore brainstorming session on where music should go next.” Actually, maybe there’s a subtle message in there – because how often are the brain storming sessions presented as the finished product? Yep. I’m with ya, Steve.
