it's good to see a young band start out by taking a few risks, and not restricting themselves to the now proven formula of ‘happy twee'...
Given the simplistic maturity of the
EP, it was a shock to discover that this was the band’s debut live performance. No surprise, then that all four of them looked like they were kacking it as they launched into the instrumental opener, ‘Domino’! Emerging unscathed at the end of this atmospheric slow-builder, their nerves seemed to settle, and despite the occasional missed cues, the ten-song set passed all too quickly and happily without any hitches.
All five tracks featured on the debut
EP were given an airing, to rapturous applause: following ‘Domino,’ ‘Halopeeno’ saw bassist Waldo feature heavily, whilst Alison belted out the lyrics, duly shout-harmonised by guitarist/vocalist Chris. ‘Boyscout’ with the ‘shoo-wop-a-dooby-dooby’ backdrop saw the frenetic pace drop for about two minutes. It was quieter and more melodic – if a little threatening!
‘Oh Jay’ had Alison screaming the vocals over the top of Rob’s manic thrashing of the cymbals and Waldo’s pounding bass. ‘Purple Mini Jack’, the set closer, started with a deep prominent bass line, a simple ‘plinky’ guitar line lay over the top (you can tell I play no instruments myself!) and again Alison’s shouted vocals competing for attention.
Sounding a bit like The Go! Team would, were they possessed by really pissed-off, psychopathic, evil demons with both
PMT and
ADHD, it was so good to see a young band start out by taking a few risks in playing this type of music, and not restricting themselves to the now proven formula of ‘happy twee.’
The interaction with the crowd; the on-stage movement; the confidence: these will all come with gig-experience. Indeed, it is hoped that some London shows may be offered. In the meantime… enjoy the noise!
