Male Bonding Q&A

Pumpkin’ by Male Bonding is one of the best tracks we’ve posted this year. Cue a quick Q&A with John Arthur Webb from the band:

Q: I enjoyed the exhange between yourselves and Playground magazine about the covermount CD. Do you think bands need ‘the media’ to spread the word these days?
A: absolutely not. a lot of times the media just write their own gross take on things, or write about your band / music in their foney take on being cool and interesting kinda way, and actually end up making things worse… more harm than good. not all the time, but some of the time.

Q: Are you ‘cutting edge’?
A: this is related to our disagreement with playground magazine right? i very much doubt it. we’re certainly not doing anything new musically, but i guess we operate in a different way to a lot of indie bands. we are careful about what we take part in. i really just mean that we are not going to do every show or interview that we get offered. i understand why bands do this, but we don’t want to associate ourselves with certain publications.

Q: Did you read the recent rant from Future of the Left about their album being leaked? Any opinion on downloading entire albums?
A: i didn’t hear about this, and to be honest i don’t really care. there are ways of tackling this. you just have to be more creative about things. sonic youth have that totally DOWN with the way they are releasing their new album.

Q: Why the fondness for split 7 inches / cassettes?
A: we’re all nerds. we all still buy tapes. still hunt for 7’s. it’s important to us.

Q: Are there any bands you’ve approached to do a split release with who have turned you down?
A: no one has turned us down.

Q: If you could do a split release with any band, in the history of popular music, who would it be?
A: mine would be the beach boys or the wipers or nirvana.

Q: What upcoming releases are Paradise Vendors putting out?
A: it’s possible that next up is a 7" called "female bonding". that’s all i can say about that right now.

Q: What are you looking forward to most about touring with the Vivian Girls?
A: just hanging with cassie, katy, ali and mark their TM. love those guys. last time we hung out we ate pizza and watched ‘meet the parents’ at our place. you can’t beat that kind of evening…

Q: Can I borrow We Jam Econo?
A: no, you should buy it if you want to see it. support mike watt.
